Hey guys.
I have a two tone (grey/blue) 1988 FJ62 with 151K on the clock. Engine is strong, with a minor rear seal leak.

tires are good / 30K on 31" BFG AT's on black steelies
new front rear brakes

she's stock as this was my daily driver for the last 4 yrs, I'm selling because I bought a 2001 4runner.

the bad:
usual rust on the rear gate, quarters, frame is decent due to undercoating from the factory.

front low speed accident : with dents to the stock bumper, right quarter and hood... Nothing major but need to be pulled

could be a good parts truck if someone needs a decent interior or strong engine.

thanks guys

I need to see if I'm an idiot or the Town Fair Tire guy is an idiot.

Wifey blew out the left rear tire the other day on her 2003 Volvo XC90 (all wheel drive). I ordered 2 new ones to match brand, tread, rating, etc, same as the ones on the front.

Since the front 2 were a little worn, I asked him to put the worn ones on the back and out the new ones in the front. He looked at me like I was an idiot.

He pulled out a diagram of a skid pattern of a car with the ass end sliding out. I said "that's great but it's all wheel drive so if the ass end is sliding out the odds are the whole car would be sliding." I explained that it would be much better to have the new tires with fresh tread on the front for steering and grip purposes in general, including if I ended up in said skid.

He shook his head and gave me a look like I was completely retarded. I said if it was rear wheel drive I would agree but he was wrong.

I finally had to demand that they put the new tires on the front and he caved.

Who is right?

The only reason I can think of them wanting to put new tires on the rear is that the older tires on the front will wear out faster and you'll be back in sooner to buy more tires.

Another sales guy tried the same thing with a 45 year old woman who had the same argument as me (she wasn't there when I was arguing) The other salesman said having new tires on the back made the car track straighter in the snow. That just seemed flat out dumb.

Thoughts?

(Also, their invoice was $60 higher than quoted over the phone and the internet. That got fixed quickly with only minor squabbling.)

So I'm trying to figure out what to do for sliders on the 40.

I like this sort of design from 4 Plus:

4+Plus FJ40 Rock Sliders W/Step

I like the stock look of these, but I'm concerned about mounting sliders on the body. With the 60, I had body mounted sliders which worked awsome 95% of the time, until I slide off a rock sideways, and with no support from the inside, it bent the whole body to a point where my doors didn't open correctly.

Any thoughts?

I'm lookin for either one 285/75/16 Michelin for a spare or possibly a whole set of what you may have. Anyone upgrade their tires and still have the stockers kickin around? Lookin for a lower mileage set or just one decent spare. Thanks! I'll consider anything local for a spare. We're rollin the dice now without one.

AUTOMOTIVE OPERATION

I like the technique for pulling your self out with a rope around the wheel...kinda like a Hub Drum Winch:

FIBER ROPE can often be wrapped around a tire in much the same manner. The trick is to drive the car along the length of the rope until it is out of the difficult area. With wide tires this is not difficult, and is a very satisfactory way of extricating the car. (See Figure 4.00b.)

I have really enjoyed meeting the people from Yankee Toys recently and was wondering what I could...

I have really enjoyed meeting the people from Yankee Toys recently and was wondering what I could do to join.

I dont have a lot of time. I want to be up front about that.

At times, I really want to hang out with people who want to hear what I am interested in. My wife has grown tired of my ramblings.

We saw 10 seconds of Lost Boys last week.
It happened to be the first 10 minutes or so and we both knew I was waiting to see the 55 before changing the channel.

She doesnt deserve that.

I went to an open meeting waaaaaay back in 2000 or 2001 on Rt. 9 at a restaurant.
I dont remember the name of it. I do remember seeing a 40 that a guy and his dad had put a 22R into
and a sprung-over 60.

Anyways, I love wrenching and wheeling. I hate wrenching by myself, but have been doing it for years.
I like people but dont always have time for them.
I feel guilty for that, but I am stretched thin with all of the things I am interested in doing.
When I have the time, I'm 100% or nothing. I think thats fair because I feel that is what is expected of me,
and that is what I can bring to the table. If I can help, I will be there.

Do I fit in somewhere?
