So I'm mulling things around in regards to having a place to work on my vehicles and buying (not renting) a place to live. Ideally, I want to live in a condo or townhome instead of a house. I am single, have no kids, nor a bunch of belongings. I do, however, have 2 vehicles that I work on regularly. The idea is to have a condo or apartment close to the city and a garage or workspace out past the burbs.

I'm not sure if this even exists but I would want to buy a garage big enough for 2 vehicles, 2 post lift, tools, storage, etc. Is there such a thing as storage units that can be purchased and used as a garage? Or something similar?

Maybe renting a bay in one of the industrial buildings is my only option.

Mudders with Non Profit or Fundraising exp.

I would like to reach out to any mudders on here who have had experience with getting non profits...

I would like to reach out to any mudders on here who have had experience with getting non profits or have successfully raised large funds thru corporate activity for charity purposes. I have no experience with this at all.

I am in the beginning stages of research with the hopes of setting up a non profit organization with a focus on community involvement.

The idea is to work with adults dealing with cancer who were recently diagnosed, are in remission, or relapsed, who would benefit from venturing out in the outdoors, and doing many of the activities some of us on here enjoy: wheeling, camping, hiking, backpacking, surfing, rock climbing, kayaking, etc. etc. Ideally, these people have little experience with the activities I have stated so they can get an opportunity to experience it for the first time.

The funds would go towards paying for the cost of equipment purchases or rentals, transportation, meals, travel, etc. etc. and of course administrative expenses. I would work with cancer patients in Southern California.

Those interested in knowing more and can provide me with information can IM me with their email address or phone number so I can reply back.

I like this website as a model example.... except this one is focused on kayaking and it is based in Colorado...

First Descents | First Descents

Short story:
I was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer (Multiple Myeloma) in the fall of 2006. I went into remission shortly after I got on medication, stayed in remission till this summer, when I relapsed. My disease is being held at bay and it is stable, close to going into remission again. But there was much pain and tribulations I had to deal with before my diagnosis, during, and shortly after.

I used this website and my objective to modify my 80 series as a distraction from my disease in a way, as it allowed me an opportunity to pour hours of reading and researching about outfitting my rig, learning to wrench on it, become more familiar with off road terrain etc. etc. And then doing the work myself or with the help of friends of course.

With that said, I feel it is now the opportunity for me to explore the non profit idea. I have had friends and family suggest that I consider doing this, since they believe I can be a sort of motivation for some people who are going thru a similar experience like I went through.

Later, I would ask for help with writing the business plan.

Cheers!

James

November 20, 2009

Dr. Gregg and Kathryn Korbon's son Brian was almost 9 years old when he told his parents he wouldn't make it to his "double digits."
"That's when I got worried," said Kathryn, who took her son to see a therapist. Kathryn and Gregg recounted Brian's strange premonition at StoryCorps in Charlottesville, Va.
Brian hadn't wanted a birthday party when he turned 9; but in the next several months, he decided he wanted a party after all.
Then one day, Kathryn came home to find Brian pulling a red wagon down the driveway, filled with his toys and camping gear.
"I'm ready to go on my trip," the boy said.
Kathryn replied, "Brian, I'll be so sad if you leave."
"Mom, I have to go."
His mother explained that Brian couldn't leave because of his upcoming party; he relented.
But before the celebration — planned for May 8, 1993 — Brian wrote letters to some of his friends, and put a sign on his door that read, "Brian's on a trip. Don't worry about me."
Brian played in a Little League game after the party. Though he was the smallest player on the team and normally was afraid of the ball, his father recalls that during that game, Brian was fearless.
He was walked in his first at-bat. The next batter hit a triple — Brian ran the bases, charging across home plate.
"He was the happiest little boy you ever saw. He gave me a high-five and went into the dugout," Gregg recalls, "and then he collapsed."

A Little League field in Charlottesville, Va., is named after Brian C. Korbon.

Before his death in 1993, Brian posted this sign to his bedroom door.

When his coach brought Brian out of the dugout, Gregg tried to revive him. "I'm an anesthesiologist. That's what I do, is resuscitate people," he said.
"And something inside told me he wasn't coming back."
Soon after leaving the hospital, Kathryn realized her son had somehow known what would happen to him.
"That's what he was trying to tell us all that time," she said.
"Yeah, but it wasn't in my belief system that something like that could happen," Gregg replied.
Gregg returned to the field after Brian's death, to get his car. On a beautiful spring day, he watched another game of Little Leaguers.
"All of a sudden, everything got very clear," Gregg recalls. "And I had this sense that if I could bring Brian back, it would be for me, not for him — that he had finished. Any unfinished business was just mine."
Brian was determined to have died of heart failure. After his death, the ballpark where he had played that day was renovated and renamed the Brian C. Korbon Field.
A plaque was placed at the site:

On May 8, 1993, Brian Korbon died suddenly in the south dugout after scoring the first run of his Little League career. This ball field is dedicated to his wisdom, faith and courage. May those who play here share Brian's sense of fair play and joy of life, and those who cheer them find a greater sense of community and love for their children.

Tripp to Moab options

Me and a buddy are playing with the idea of going to moab next summer. It would be a Friday to sunday 9-10 day tripp. Our :princess: and kid would be part of the tripp. That makes 8 of us total. Driving down with our truck would need provide enough space. So we could get the :princess: and kid in my Mitsubishi Montero (7 passenger) and me and my buddy following with a CJ7 and BJ42. We estimate that would cost us 3k in gas alone. going down with 3 trucks would allow me to pull the M101 and sleep in camp ground along the way and probably even in Moab. Saving some $ in motel/hotel

Or we could get both truck on a 25'long flat bed trailer i have and haul them down in moab. For that we would need a 8 passenger truck. Probably a E-350. There seem to have a bunch for sale. I could buy probably one for 4-5k and pull the flat bed trailer with both truck on it. The down side is i wouldn't have my M101 and the RTT but we could probably do a mix of camping in a regular tent and motel/hotel. That would save us at least 1500$ in fuel. Once back sell the E-350 for 1K less. hoping we don't blow the engine during the tripp. Obviously 4-5K E-350 will get me a high mileage one.

What you all think? I like the idea of everyone in the same truck for the road tripp. I know the wifes will not be following us every day in moab so we must have a 3rd vehicule for them.

Now can a E-350 fully loaded pull a 12-13k #, 25' flatbed with 2 trucks? Or it is recepy for disaster.

What you'd do, any suggestions?

After 25K miles, we're in need of new tires. I'm leaning towards the Michelin Hydroedges, but they're not runflats. The Blizzaks are runflats, but are horribly low mileage tires, so say the reports.

So is the runflat a REQUIREMENT on the Sienna's or just suggested because the Sienna doesn't have a spare tire. Will they void the warranty if we don't get runflats? We have towing/road hazard through our insurance co, so it really wouldn't matter, it would just be an inconvenience.

Anyone know?

WTF...

Just got a beautiful black envelope, offering me a pre-approved credit card made out of CARBON...(which they reiterate about 60 times)...

Well, I perused the offer and it is really no different than my current free CCs...except that it is black and made out of carbon and costs $500 per year to have in your wallet.

Here is what they say...

Dear Jeb,

By invitation, you have been PRE-QUALIFIED to receive the exclusive Visa Black Card. Limited to only 1% of U.S. residents, Black Card members are ensured the highest caliber of personal service. Cardmembers enjoy a 24-hour Concierge Assistant, Exclusive Rewards Program, and Luxury Gifts from some of the world's top brands. Made with carbon, the Visa Black Card is guaranteed to get you noticed. 13.24% (Variable APR)

So, basically, for $495 a year, I get what I should have with any credit card... good service and an average rate, oh...and "luxury gifts?"

Maybe the BLACK CARBON will make my tallywhacker appear 2" larger if I throw that card down in front of the ladies..?

Arlington Man Arrested In Fatal Shooting Of Alleged Burglar

Posted: 10:45 am PST November 19, 2009Updated: 11:02 am PST November 19, 2009
ARLINGTON, Wash. -- In what police say is an unusual case, a homeowner was arrested Wednesday night, accused of fatally shooting a man he said burglarized his house.Detectives said the incident started Monday when a 38-year-man called 911 to report a burglary at his home in the 22800 block of 37th Avenue Northeast in unincorporated Arlington. The man said he had returned home to find a burglar running out of his house, and found some of his wife’s jewelry was missing, a Snohomish County Sheriff's Department news release said.Police said deputies and a K-9 unit searched for the burglar but found no one.The news release said a few hours later, the man called 911 again and said the burglar had returned to the area. A deputy arrived to find the homeowner in the area looking for the burglar.Police said the homeowner told officers he spotted a man in a nearby ditch along the road and yelled at him to come out and talk to him, but the man ran off across a field and into a wooded area. The deputy checked the area where the homeowner said he had first spotted the man but found nothing. On Wednesday, a neighbor in the same area called 911 and reported finding a body in a small creek that runs through a field on his property in the 23400 block of 35th Avenue Northeast, police said. Police said the body was that of a 25-year-old Snohomish County man.Detectives said that during the course of the investigation, investigators learned that neighbors reported hearing gunshots Monday afternoon shortly before the homeowner called 911 the second time. One witness told police he talked to the homeowner who told him he had fired a couple of “warning shots” at the man the homeowner saw running away into the field and wooded area.On Wednesday night, detectives spoke to the homeowner who had called 911 twice Monday. Police said the man told them he was aware a body had been discovered in his neighborhood and that he was a part of the investigation. He then requested an attorney. Detectives arrested and booked the 38-year-old man into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of second-degree murder.Police said the Snohomish County Medical Examiner examined the body at the scene and discovered what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He also found items on the man's person that appeared to be consistent with what the homeowner said was stolen in Monday’s burglary, police said.
