Here's a pic showing the widening of the fenders before finishing -- from the builder's website:

sorry,
I don´t know any more ... our car is 198cm wide, how wide is a J4 ?? 167cm ?? the difference has to be divided by 2....
looks like this...
I have been glad that we stabilized the fenders travelling on washboard
here is the untouched J4 body on the 80 frame with 35" tires
Hey VDJ 79
nice truck and welcome to mud ! You should show your rigs in the J70 section too, they long for nice 70 pics..

Soenke,
What engine is that, the 1HZ or 1HD-T? I can't really see from the picture with that incredible reinforcing scaffolding the builder put it.

Hey, just a quick up grade...
changed the water tanks from V2A to PE because of the noice the water made while driving off road...
FT-Design: Home now there is silence ...
still some work to do...
but we decided against working on the car and left for a short trip to the Baltic countries wich we haven´t managed to visit yet..
outside the holiday season, we have been alone in the few remaining open camp sides, wich we prefere to use in touristic areas
places in the woods or at the beach are easy to find too
just love the baltic sea shores
and the old wooden farm houses with flower and vegetable gardens surrounded by apple trees
many poor old people in the (beautifully restored) capitals, not having a garden to feed them
and young business aiming for :
well no expedition,
but a long overdue trip to get to know our baltic neighbours better

its going foward in small steps (but no changes to be shown on photos)
we brought the car to a specialist MALTEC - Leichtbautechnologie für Expeditions- und Rallyefahrzeuge to reduce the wiring to the absolutely essential,
can´t wait to get rid of this, wich is somehow just stuffed away in the moment:
(there are nice J7 and J8 camper conversions on the maltec side to see..)
meanwhile just a few shots from the car on the last trip

I like this view..

plenty of nice places to camp

everything getting ... grey when the gravelroad is wet

bedtime..

Hi Soenke
I have been watching your truck both here and on Expo, I love it! but I have one question, in your first post here you express regrets using Vintage A/C.
We are plannning on using Vintage in our volvo TGB13 since even the original heating is rudimentary at best. But your statement has got me concerned, why do you regret using it?
Thanks, Christian

hey Christian, thanks
I wich I´d stayed stock because the vintage does need a lot of space too (I thought I would save more space in the cab not using the stock heater and A/C), it breaks the first time trying to fit it under the dash, the brackets have to be reinforced anycase.
It dosn´t make an impression of quality...
and the handling is weird too, (using the stock heater pull-switches)
heat pull out ist cold air on the windscreen, halfway in is warm air to screen, completly in the warm air goes to the feet.
The fresh air pull changes between screen/feet or direkt blow in the cab....
it took quiete some time to remember this ....
May be its different set up for your volvo? For heat why not using an Eberspächer / Webasto ?

Thanks for the reply! So to sum up, it's the quality and how you operate the controls that bothers you right?
I do not want to highjack your thread, but the reason why we want to use something like Vintage Air is that the Volvos original system is bad, it can barely heat the cab. We have fitted a Toyota 1KZ-T engine and gearbox, so engine heat is not a problem, we plan on having a Eberspächer or Webasto burner. but for now we just want a new system to destribute heat, and by using a system like Vintage Air we could get A/C as well. I have actually made space for a Gen II behind the drivers seat and plan on using the remote control panel and duct the air where it needs to go.
But your un-satisfaction makes me re-think this idea, eventhough I thought the Vintage Air solution as a good and affordable one.

well it´s not so bad that I would change the running Vintage to stock now, still the stock parts are waiting in the basement...
Why don´t you ask in the J4 section, as the Vintage is beeing build and sold in the US, many more mud users should be able to help you
Volvo with Toyota engine sound just right...I have been tempted by the Volvos too...

Thanks alot Sönke, I think I will do that!
The Volvos are great, but b*t ugly compaired to a J4, and by no means in a class like yours, your vehicle keeps the rest of us aspiring for more!
