I have an 87 4runner I'm thinking about making into an expedition rig. Does anyone know where I can find pictures of any expedition 4runners for ideas, preferably 1st gen 4runners.
Thanks

Wow, 50 views and no one can point me to any pictures of 4runner expedition rigs ???
Doesn't anyone make a 4runner into an expedition vehicle???

Go to Camping Labs Fernando has a 4 runner expedition rig but it isn't first generation.

I saw that one, thanks.

for 4runner stuff, go to yotatech.com. ih8mud for 4runners, with a younger membership

also visit mycolorado.org for a nicely built 4runner (3rd gen) that has been to some very nice places in CO.

before I sold my 4runner, that's where I hung out. As long as you don't need to carry a LOT of stuff with passangers, shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the info but I'm a little confused.
Maybe I just don't understand the expedition "thing".
I'm not looking for 4runner info. Also I'm not sure what you meant by "younger membership". If your talking age, I'm 38. If your talking about me being a newbie here, I'm not new. I've been a member here (along with a bunch of other toyota boards) for a couple years but had computer problems and got a new Dell with Vista and its giving me problems.

Anyway, here is my story and what I'm looking to do.
I had an 87 shortbed on 35's with 5.29's yada yada yada. I sold that and bought a stock 87 4runner with the intentions on having it as a streetable rock rig but being there is only one off road park close to me here in PA I figured its a waste and even though there is nowhere to go on a real expedition around here either it would be more practical to make the runner into a expedition rig.
When I say driver its not my daily driver, I have a few other vehicles. I guess I just need something to work on.:meh:
I have a cabin in the pocono mountains and do a lot of hunting, trapping, fishing, canoeing, ect.
So with all that said, I posted this to get ideas on what I can do to make my 4runner look a little different than a stock one and get some practical use out of the time & money I spend.

I bought a Thule roof rack for it to haul my canoes, and I'm going to pick up a basket rack tonight from a guy that buys toyotas to part out. Its coming off a 1st gen 4runner that was layed on its side. the rack is a little bent but for $20 I don't care. I also plan to put on a small lift to fit 33"s (it has 31"s now) and change the gears to 4.88's with a locker in the rear.

Any other info, idea's or suggestions would be great.

Thanks

sounds like you are on the way....

I suspect that the yotatech recommendation wasn't aimed at your age so much as observing that the avg yotatech user is probably younger than the average mudder, or at least the vibe feels more youthful.

Regardless-- in my mind, a good start to an expedition rig is:

31 or 33" tires. I prefer skinny- 10.5 or 255/85 for example
some storage in the rear. Drawers are nice.
lights. both front and rear.
maybe bumpers
selectable locker(s) rear is priority, front is luxury
decent sound system (long trip makes tunes more important)

and so on

You just need to build it around your interests. Maybe some gun racks, rod holders and strorage boxes for all the other hunting and trapping gear
I like to go away with lots of 12v outlets that I can plug the fridge or lights into for cooking and vehicle maintenance.
If you have a fridge, you may want to think about a deep cycle battery that can be recharged while your driving or from the mains at night while camped

Sorry. Didn't mean to push a button with you. Yotatech has had great information on modding 4Runners for expedition style travel in the past. By younger, I was reffering to specific age, in that a large percentage of posters on Yotatech are in their early 20s, or still in high-school, so the level of discussion may not be to the depth as it is here on Ih8mud, and the bredth of expedition style travel may not be as broad.

other resources to seek:
4WDTrips.net Forums - Powered by vBulletin not toyota specifically, but has primarily expedition style modifications for an array of vehicles

BajaTaco.com 3rdgen Taco

Good luck.

Thanks Sandcruiser & RoscoFJ73, that's the kinda info I'm looking for.

Uberhahn,
You didn't push any buttons I just wasn't sure what you were trying to say.

I joined 4WDTrips, I noticed one forum they have is a survival forum. I've been into survival since the 80's so maybe I can help out there.
Here is a couple pictorials I just did up for a board.

I watched a show on tv last night (fox reality I think) it was called The Long Way Around (or something like that). it was about these 2 guys on a expedition motorcycle trip in Russia. They were followed by a support crew and the showed the crew crossing rivers an stuff......it looked like something that I would really enjoy.
Anyone else see it??

Was one of them Ewen Mcgregor, the English actor? I saw it in oz last year. Must have been a pain when the whole of those small russian towns wanted to meet them and make them drink their traditional rotten goats milk and all the cops hanging around wanting to be in on the action:rolleyes:.
I think they were a team in the Dakar in 06 also

Tricky, if you find something better then Rauch Creek please let me know.

As far as the 4R, have you started to put a list together of where you would go and what you would need? Each expedition build is unique in that its built for what the driver will use it for. If your going across the sahara you might need different equipment then if your going on long fishing/hunting trips in the northeast.

Here are some pics of my '85 4Runner...it is more of a "roadtrip" build. I am leaving D/FW on Saturday and heading down through Mexico looking for good surf along the Pacific coast.

It is also my daily driver.

- 283,000 mi. on the clock
- custom roof rack with lights
- custom front seat brackets that allow for 5" of extra leg room
- BFG All-Terrain Tires

Thanks for the pic's and links.

FJ40-Garage,
How far from Baumholder are you??
I lived in Baumholder for a couple years.

fj40tom,
Very nice, I wish I could find a decent 85 around here.
I could buy this 85 for $400 but it needs a lot of body work.
