BJ74 Camper....
![]() Theres my beast. My fiancee has had her first taste of camping and she loves it (thank goodness). I've had this wild idea of making this into a convertible camper type vehicle. My original idea was to get a factory soft top and modify it into an expandable tent of sorts. Due to the tops design this is not really possible. Next, I was thinking of having a marine shop build a soft top to my specs, expansions and all. However, I haven't found a marine shop here in Japan yet...even though I am in a fishing community. Finally, the FRP. I've been dreaming (literally came to me when sleeping) about a pneumatic driven lifter system (have an on board compressor and 2.5L res) that lifts a modified FRP roof. Some other supports would be fashioned and fold down prison style beds would be used. I would also like to make extension rails out the rear and make a fabric enclosure for storage and foot space for the beds. Any ideas on how to keep mostly stock lines while building some sort of convertible camper? |

Is there no one else who does things like that? All I see is them. I'd also like to keep it mostly stock lines or reversable because here in JP I have a yearly inspection...and the cost for a camper and the cost for a truck are different.

I'd go for a roof top tent set-up. There was a listing on ebay Australia a week or so ago from this company selling ones imported in from South Africa. I think they were around $600 for a tent which would cost over $2,000 here.

Leave the FRP right where it is ,waterproof , warm and legal. Take the roof tent off when not in use. IMO ,get one where the vehicle can be moved in an emergency without having to fold the tent up. The one in the top right corner would be great on a MWB http://www.rooftopcampers.com/galler...&g2_itemId=302 __________________ HZJ75 cab chassis 95 model ,stocker FJ73+1HZ Diesel NEW GEARBOX 1HZ =same power as 3F with 30% better fuel economy 2in Dobinsons lift.Powerdown adj shocks 33 in BFG A/T HJ61 with slidin windas regrettfully SOLD:(Volvo 740 GL |

I have the same tent sold under a different name. I would say it is an okay tent for the price and the occasional camper. I will say that is has enough space for two average sized adults. It can accommodate very tall people too.
