Step 1: Sell unreliable vehicle
Step 2: Buy a reliable vehicle such as a cruiser

If you chose not to sell said unreliable vehicle try posting in chevy forum. If you want some flat bed ideas check out pirate4x4.com

Vague question are hard to answer…try to elaborate a little more. What is the intended use of the truck? What do you plan to hall/store in said flat bed?

Welcome to mud

Half ton of hay isn't all that much. Think how many trips it will take for a reasonable supply for a week and a bunch of horses. Even if you only feed them the absolute minimum 1lbs/100wt/day hay for their health you will still need to haul in grain and nutritional balancer at a couple lbs/100wt per day. It adds up fast if you have any number of days or horses.

I'd quickly consider a long wheelbase medium duty UNIMOG. Little mods needed other than getting it with the right back and tires. When it isn't needed for hauling you can throw a set of tractor tires on it and it will work as a 2nd tractor.

Sell your S10, then you will have enough to buy a decent recovery bumper for your future toyota.

I had an 85 s-10 blazer while I was in college and law school. I loved being able to camp and go off road. I probably have more fond memories of that vehicle than any other. HOWEVER, that is more because I was 20ish and had a 4x4. The fact is, it also was one of the worst vehicles I ever had from a reliability standpoint.

If you like the truck that is all that matters. Sometimes, we just have to mod what we have because we can't afford or find what we really need. I can't help you on the flat bed. A chevy or truck forum would definitely be a better place to start, but there are lots of folks here with a lot of expertise so who knows. Maybe try posting in the truck forum - it gets more views on IH8MUD than this expedition forum.

I had a 84 S10 Blazer, monumental POS. Owned it 2 years, in the shop 36 times. Extended warranty company lost money on my S10. Traded my 82 Toyota Shortbed 4x4 for it, worst mistake I ever made. Dumped my S10 for a new 86 4Runner SR-5. Learned my lesson, I went back with Toyota, never looked back.

With what you are wanting to do, dump the S10, find a reliable Toyota 4x4 PU with Fuel Injection, and a rusted out bed, and flatbed that. There are a lot of late 80s to late 90s Toyota 4x4 PUs that can be bought reasonable and will make good work truck for you.

You could put a Toyota bezel on. That might help?

I know a guy whos family sells GMs but he drives toyotas becuase of the GM products failures and yes I have driven plenty of demo S10s, fulsize blazers and trucks even tried to own two chevys, my land cruisers and toyota trucks where all in better shape with 200-300k miles than the chevys at 70k.

before off road ability, reliability rules the roost. you will need a combination of both.

you do not want to be broken down in the wilderness and risk your life and lives of others who will try and rescue you.

so, save up and consider buying a toyota truck if you need a small truck.

imo

this is what happens you post questions about non toyotas on a toyota forum, not alot of positive feedback, but either way if your hauling a decent sized load consisently i would think about using something bigger than an S10, the payload capacity is quickly reached after moddifying and adding winches and recovery gear. good luck either way.
