This is kind of a hijack but i'm wondering if there is a company or a certain type of map that lists dirt roads or only dirt roads in a certain state or something like an atlas for that matter that lists many states. I have several county road maps that are for my area and also use a state atlas and gazzetter(sp), but sometimes those can be kinda sketchy on what roads are dirt roads (or something of the sort) and what roads are just back roads.
thanks |

I know you can't drive a car/truck on much if any of this, but I always thought this was interesting...

It is 1128 miles with only around 28% paved following the Great Divide. I figure it would be much more challenging than most unpaved roads. Would love to do this trip some day. El Camino Del Diablo is the longest continuous and unbroken (by pavement) dirt road in the lower 48. It is about 150 miles.
Others are longer, but are broken by crossing pavement or even requiring you to drive on pavement for short periods. It is possible to find a longer route by combining multiple roads, or doing a loop, etc., but no single dirt road is longer than ECDD. It is also extremely remote, which adds greatly to the appeal. At one point you are over 50 miles from the nearest town. Cool stuff. __________________ Scott Brady, Tread Lightly Master Trainer EarthRoamer XV-JP | Toyota Tacoma | Land Rover Discovery I Expedition's West Overland Journal- Expedition Magazine Expedition Portal Community |

scott are you positive about that? i want to say the lincoln highway from near nephi utah all the way into nevada is longer than that. i KNOW for a fact the road from Ogden, UT out through Lucin and into Nevada toward Wells is longer than 150 miles, with no pavement crossed or linked to other roads. Unfortunately most of it is private right of way for the Union Pacific Railroad. Not that it has prevented me driving it a half dozen times.

This is one reason my current '85 4runner has the 17 gallon OEM tank, a 26 gallon aux fuel tank (NOS Blazer diesel tank) and I carry at least one 5 gallon jerry can in addition. This is about as remote as it gets in the lower 48: 04 - NW Nevada + Black Rock Desert area July 23-27 [Can someone post this pic; why can't I post anymore pics????] Al __________________ '85 4Runner |

Rusty,
My son and I are planning our 4 week desert trip right now. One week each at Death Valley/Saline Valley, Black Rock Desert and the Great Salt Lake Desert, with perhaps a one day stopover at Tonopah to revisit TTR, Faultless and perhaps Area 51. I believe that in 2000, my son was the youngest person on the planet to see Area 51 with his own eyes, he was 6 then. Since you live in Reno, you've been to ground zero for Shoal, correct?
