86 extra cab ag appraisal truck...

I am setting up a new work truck to get to remote properties that I have to appraise up here in the middle of Montana, does that count? I have to get there following a mapping system and a GPS so it feels kind of expedition...

Finally.. I was waiting for someone to mention a "work truck". I land survey out of my 60... It's loaded down with all types of equipment.

I wish I was building a cruiser, as I often sleep out there! This truck is turning out to be a mild prerunner/trail truck cross, but with an enphasis on dependability. I am running bead locked 34x9.50 swampers on ti because of the extreme gumbo in eastern Montana when it rains. It is basically becoming an off road office/camp vehicle. I'm rebuilding an engine for it right now, I'll include some more pics, ideas and info when it's rolling under it's own power again.

Need a partner? I'm down in Billings right now, but doing the old Lewis & Clark in Toyota's sounds like a good job for me. Good thread, let us know how it goes.

Build an 80, Aux. tank and a Maggiolina. That way the ranchers can ride in luxury to and back from inspections.

OR - hire me to be the reviewer and I'll bring the diesel 60 (built for the same reasons, just a couple States to the west).

Weight: as little as possible, flatbed will get the weight down and usable space (WAY) up.

Winch *NOTE* 2MK electric winches are NOT rated for continuous duty! Hydro's ARE!

I like the idea of 34's/SR5's keeps a lot in check, reality is one, weight, breakage, usable space, wear, range : torque.

I would say Diesel but finding one that small and even finding one can be a little......hard?

The rpm's the gas can do might get you out of a mess if you have to blitz the throttle.

The more minimal you keep it the least likely you will or can have trouble....K.I.S.S.??

I'd gear it a little high if your where I think you are theres always Low range.

2MK under the carpet there is like this cast metal , I guess body supports in case of a crash, might lighten you @ 50lbs. a thin coat of paint on bed liner could be lighter than the carpet, washable too.

I think you can submarine with Toyota electronics, thats some good sh**!



Most Exped rigs are made with getting to the next gas station in mind I dont think you will have much of a problem,

then breakage, your lone wolf McQuade out there so act like it, an ARB has many quality's one is the ability to have both MAX traction (on) AND keep breakage minimal (off), an open diff is the strongest! Most people hit the button when they engage 4WD some one that knows only uses it when they have to.


(Thats why they work so good on the new sh*ty 4WD's, the sensors make it think it's moving in a straight line and keeps the brake interference out, simple!! No fuses to pull, etc)

Thanks for all the input guys! I had to backburner the thing for a while, but I finally have the parts together for the engine (stock Toyota bearings, rings etc.)

I did get to build my front shock mounts from F-250 towers to run shocks with exta travel in either direction so they can't hard bottom or top.

Light weight is the plan, so I can carry exra gear, water, fuel etc... It already has a flatbed, but a better one with a roof rack and a rooftop tent is in the works.

I'll keep you updated and take some pics.

As this is a p/u/work/beater thread...I'll add a bit of my latest acquisition...

I'm really interested in the exhaust jack! Seems really practical if you're by youself out there and stuck in the deep snow or gumbo substance! I think your little pickup will turn out cool!

Update: I got the '86 running with a "kitchen rebuilt" 22re. We used as much Toyota stuff as possible, a DOA C270 cam and an adjustable timing gear from LC. The timing gear took a little tuning, but you sure can dial in your powerband. The engine probably now peaks at about 3650-3750, a bit lower than any other setup I've had. I got 17 mpg pulling passes with 5.29 gears and 34" bias swampers. I'm guessing from prior experience that I could get 19-21 mpg with 33" radials.

It currently has a ghetto looking wooden flatbed, but I intend to replace it with a steel one with a roof rack/tent setup that I can use as an airtank or maybe even a bed with a similar roof rack/tent setup. The whole truck is pretty new inside and mechanicaly but it still looks like a POS beater, with some primer here and there and no front bumper. I have my work cut out for me but I think it will turn out very functional and somewhat profesional in appearance.

I really want one of those onboard showers too!!
