Favorite expedition rig
Ive posted this one before in the 70 forum to a mixed reaction, some say it has too much bling. However I think its one of the best Ive seen and its difficult going away with a family if you dont have a few creature comforts.
Its a HZJ75 with a turbo 1HZ,ex govt vehicle now owned by a local 4wd accessory shop. Its designed to take their family of 2 adults and 2 children into remote areas and be self sufficent for a couple of weeks. Its equipped with just about every extra inc hot showers, inverters and dual fridges on slide out trays. Those lift up doors fitted to the troopy were a $20000 conversion when the govt bought them

That's the "Michelle's Sacs" showcase rig, isn't it? Australian 4WD Monthly had a feature on this rig. It's *extremely* well thought out and implemented. I have to agree, one of my top expedition rigs!

I forgot to mention its running on leaf sprung 80 series axles. It also won top 4wd in one of the local mags. Im no a big fan of the lights on the roof or the polished tyres but I especially like the gull wing access doors. In its previous life it would have been Linesmans or telephone exchange installers DD .Some other close ups. The troopys have a lot of headroom and work well with an o/head console. I hope those switches are not as crooked as they look

Michelle's Sacs is the company that owns it and they specialise in a wide range of canvass seat covers and other canvass products for 4wds and the cruiser is a rolling advert for their company.

Favorite "expedition rig"... The one that takes you on your favorite "Expedition" of course. Had a guy up here (Alaska) decide one week that he wanted to head down to the tip of South America and come back eventually. He took his beat to crap rusty old stone stock FJ60. Made it just fine. He could just as easily have taken an old Ford LTD station wagon. Don't get too wrapped up in the rig, or you'll overlook the importance of the trip itself.

My choice for a true expedition rig would be the Turtle truck of Gary Wescott. A true pioneer in expedition travel. After 30 years and 5 builds I feel he has got it right

Apart from my cruiser
My favourite expedition rig would have to be a Unimog or an OKA.Try these links. http://www.oka.com.au/ http://www.schoensleben.ch/sur/content/index_e.shtml http://www.xor.org.uk/unimog/campermog.htm http://www.maximog.com/ http://www.expeditioncampers.com/ http://www.actionmobil.com/

Not really. Some uses of the Cruisers ARE all about the rig. Some are equally about the rig and everything else. I just don't feel that "Expedition" use, or serious back country travel should be primarily about the rig. Mark... |

As I Ive said before Im more of minimalist when it comes to Landcruisers. Like the old bushwalkers refrain"Travel light, freeze at night"(within reason)

This engines claim to fame is that it has half the moving parts of other diesels of the same size ![]() I understand they have restarted their plant and are fitting a new engine. At one stage they were talking with Caterpillar but it fell through. I did some work for the companies number 3 man once and he offered me a drive at their test track. I always regret not taking him up on the offer __________________ HZJ75 cab chassis 95 model ,stocker FJ73+1HZ Diesel NEW GEARBOX 1HZ =same power as 3F with 30% better fuel economy 2in Dobinsons lift.Powerdown adj shocks 33 in BFG A/T HJ61 with slidin windas regrettfully SOLD:(Volvo 740 GL |

Nice rigs.
I'm partial to slightly smaller expedition rigs, but that is based on the fact that in Central America, you in inevitably spend a fair amount of time in towns with narrow streets, where a larger rig just isn't any fun love those gullwing doors on the 75! But I don't understand why you would want leaf springs instead of coils (at least up front) and personally couldn't justify two fridges... maybe a fridge and a cooler, but two fridges..... seems like just too much power draw. __________________ 91 fj80 w/ 93 1HD-T.
