Handheld CB

Anyone have any experience with handheld CB's? I just bought the Cobra 75 and was told about hendheld CB's that you didn't have to mount any hardware. Do they work just as well? It seems the range would not be as good. What do you think?

I would skip the handheld units. Several of my riding buddies have tried them. Their range was so poor that we had to keep them in the middle of group just so they could pickup lead vehicle. Their transmissions only reached a few hundred yards at best.

EDIT:

On a side note, I got a bunch of grief, but I once tried a glass mount antenna. It wasn't too hot for talking to my 18 wheeler good old buddies, but it was sufficient for group trail rides. I did switch back to a 4' firestick, but I might try again on this land cruiser.

That's kinda what I thought. Some of the reviews on the one I was looking at said they plugged it into a mounted car antenna for better reception. We'll probably stick with the Cobra 75 I got.

Just run a good antenna to it and it will work fine... Otherwise, handhelds don't like to work when you are sitting in a rig.

I like to have a handheld for when I am spotting, so only need to broadcast 10-20 feet. I also have a handheld HAM for just this reason. I would think having the external mounted antenna would help quite a bit...I have one for the handheld HAM as well as the handheld CB
