Street maps on handheld GPS: work out OK? quirky map here

something a bit odd here

I have a handheld Garmin Venture Cx gps with a small screen (170x220 or so).

I uploaded a street map to the gps through Mapsource (it's Ibycus USA). On my computer screen in Mapsource the maps look great, I can see a bunch of street at once.

Unfortunately, it does not quite work out like that on the GPS. Basically, when I'm at low magnification it only shows one or 2 big freeways and nothing else. I'll increase the magnification and still nothing much, until finally all the streets pop up. But unfortunately, at the point where I can actually see streets and names, the mag is so high that I can only see something like a block or a couple hundred yards worth of streets on the little screen so not very useful for wide navigation.

Is this a matter of my very small screen pixel count?
Is this a quirk of my GPS or Ibycus?
Is that the case with OEM Garmin street maps also?

Basically, I would like to see a progressive hierarchy of streets, where you see smaller streets as you zoom in but still see a few arteries at low mag. Here it's kinda all or nothing.

Normal?
Common?

I have a Venture HCx, and what I see on my computer does NOT translate to the GPS when I've zoomed way in.

have you looked at

GPSFileDepot - Garmin Compatible Custom Maps
or
Mapping

I've used these when I was in Colorado, and even some here when geocaching here in Texas. Unless I've overzoomed (~20-50'), I have pretty good topo maps, especially on the highest resolution.

do you use MapSource?

yes, I got the ibycus through GPSfiledepot and used Mapsource to install it on the unit.

yes, it seems like the topo maps behave better, as in closer elevation lines when you zoom in.

But for streets it's this all or nothing affair that is less than compelling.

How about the Garmin OEM street maps? do they do that too? anybody?
