Magellan Triton 2000??

I just read where Magellan and Primordial for enhanced off-road use and mapping....it pretty much reads terrain and helps determine the best route to destination without trying to make you cross rivers, ravines, etc like in past....

The Magellan Triton has the new technology...and looking at 2000.

Article on Triton and new technology

Magellan Triton 2000

comments or experience with new technology would be appreciated...

Hey Brock,

Not to be a bad guy, but from past experience Magellan has not had very good reliability, as well, they have not been very supportive of legacy products they have produced. They seem to have the Bill Gates/Microsoft attitude - throw it out there fast as we can, we will fix it later attitude.

I use Lowrance products, but I know a lot of other guys on mud use Garmin as well and have had very good luck with that too.

Just something to think about.

Also not trying to be a buzz kill, but how would this help us guys who have to stay on the trails with our rigs? This seems to be an application built for the Army and Marines who don't need to worry about damaging the environment. In addition, any product that uses aerial or ortho photos needs a really huge amount of storage for the photos.

I don't get your post. We are talking of a Magellan GPS unit, which from my personal past experience, and other buddies of mines experience, suck. I am recommending Lowrance or Garmin GPS units which has nothing to do with what you are saying.

I would suspect that this 'feature' is more for hiking in areas without trails and not for off-road driving.

At least I hope that is the intent.

Sorry I was trying to respond to the original post and didn't mean to hit the quote key on yours. What I was getting at is that the software being discussed wouldn't work for those of us who need to stay on the trail because it doesn't recognize trails, only terrain from the USGS terrain database. Sorry for the confusion.

It's the internet, it's mass confusion

I would not buy a Magellan product again...

I'm happy with my Garmin, a couple quirks and all....

I had a look at the Magellan Triton 2000 online. Looks like a nice hand held GPS, but I would wonder about reliability. If I had the chance to test one out I might be easier on it. It LOOKS good, but looks don't go before function. I'd be worried about 1) the real waterproofness and 2) the software.

Too many toys...... too little cash !!

PS- when I was in the military we had 4 out of 6 on average in the Magellan GPS units FAIL due to both of these issues. Waterproofness, and software. The units were supposed to be waterproof mil spec.... ok whatever
