flatbed scanners

School me

Looking for a good flatbed scanner that can do photos from the 40s and 50s. OCR would be nice too..

I just picked up an HP G4050 this past Saturday. Works well, I like how it will take a document to PDF with one button push on the lid. My only complaint is it takes awhile to warm up for the first scan, but once you get it going, it goes pretty quickly.

I think the better units (based on my research into an acceptable flat scanner for 35mm negs) are Epson, Canon and now the HP ...
Some of the Epson's (4990, v700 etc) may have more resolving ability than you need for prints ... but if the occasional 35mm colour negative or slide is in the works - they seem to be adequate. I have an older Epson 31xx or 32xx (I think) ...and it is excellent for larger prints..not so hot for slides and negs though....

I've been using the same Agfa since the late 90s. But CNET's reviewers are raving about the Epson Perfection range (no affiliation).

Good luck.
