lowrance Baja 540C

hello,
I was reading my latest issue of Overland magazine, there was an article on GPSes. I was drawn to the lowrance Baja 540C, I like the large screen and ability to create waypoints as well as topo maps.
Here is a linky:
http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Aut...GMBaja540c.asp
My question is has anyone seen one in person and/or used one?
Input?
Hola
eric

Hey man I think there was a thread on here already about the L540C.... Run a quick search. It's a great GPS, I am going to put one in my Cruiser too. I have an older Lowrance GPS and it works great as well. Excellent in heavy tree coverage.

The 540C was also reviewed in the new issue of Overland Journal. The only real negative have to do with the three bulky connections/wires...and of course the large size which from a screen/monitor perspective is what makes it so attractive; and the fact it cannot do auto-routing. But if this feature is important you can use a smaller street type GPS for street/highway trips.

Hey,
Was watching Dust to glory for the 20 or 30th time and just noticed one of the trophy trucks had what looks like a 540c style GPS mounted in camera view! If the Baja 1000 guys use it, it must be somewhat ok? No?

ive been doing a bit of reading in the Lowrance manuals and apparently the NMEA 2000 system supports temp sensors/fuel level-fuel flow and a host of other networked items like depthfinders and fishfinders........nothing like pulling your rig into your favorite creek and scanning for fish-

has anyone looked into this and set up temps sensors on their 540c? I dont like that the manual calls for inputting fuel fills each time --but maybe this is only for calibration of the instrument.

For us obd1 scanguageless types......it seems like the added benefits would be a big bonus.

Does this unit have any type of video inputs for a camera or other device?

According to Lowrance customer service two weeks ago, not yet, and the engineers have several concepts they are playing with to use the ethernet port (third port) in the back of the unit (labeled in the maunual as "future enhancement." Customer Service said what the engineers are cooking up won't be ready until the early part of '08.

And, it would be interesting to see if some techie out there were to try and see what would happen if they put a video input into the ethernet port ...

The old, original "Lowrance Baja" (no number on that one) also worked with DGPS..... I notice the newer models all say WAAS. Question for those who have the 540C is this - in your manual, does it say that you can also use DGPS with the 540C??

Thanks man, looks like only WAAS. I'm installing a more permanent set up for my Lowrance GlobalMap 100 with DGPS instead.
