yaesa ft 7800 install
yaesu must not of had much luck selling the remote
head mount kits for their radios because now they
give them away for free. mine came this week so i
desided to have some fun...
first a little fishing trip threading the "phone cord"
thru the headliner...
then i pulled the rearview mount and added a RAM
mount ball, nice and solid....
dropped another ram mount on the back of the head
mount that comes in the kit...
and there you go. sunvisors have room, sits above
the mirror, doesn't block the map light...
not sure what about the mic location yet but the
barleypops were calling so thats it for today...

Now that's what I call a clean install. Did you use the ram's short arm? I think it's a 3incher? Curious to see where you mount the mic - post em up Time to redo mine...
Coincidently I just finished installing mine as well. Here's a couple pics.
radio under the aob drawer system. This location allows me to hook up a notebook for frequency programming. Also doesn't rob storage space. If it gets super hot I'll wire in some computer fans for added air flow.
Here's an external speaker, above the footrest. I wanted to put it in the dash where the factory 3.5" speaker is for a stealthy install but decided against it. I'd like to upgrade the 3.5" when the rest of the sounds are upgraded.
And finally the faceplate/mic. I wanted to keep the faceplate out of the sun, keep a factory look, not have the mic cable hang in front of anything. I like JM's install more though, very slick.

Can you post up some closeups of how you routed the cabling? Additionally, there's a ram bracket that fits right to our rear view mirror? I have zero ram mount experience so please help?

i took the plate that holds the rearview, drilled it and mounted a
ram mount ball to it. i used it because it was the most rigid thing i
could find to mount to, it's tapped right into the roof structure...
.. i'll shoot some more pics tomorrow.

So who's selling the radios for cheap?
Very nice install...have you seen the new Yaesu FTM=10R for 2m/70m? Same concept with the faceplate...looks much smaller and is somewhat portable.
I'm new to the ham radio thing...Is 2M/70 the two most desirable bands to start with?

it's a promotion from yaesu thru 10/31, everybody that sells
the 7800r is giving away the remote mount kit - YSK7800...

I installed my FT-7800R under the driver seat with the head mounted to the left of the steering wheel. The flat cord for the mic comes up by the parking brake. The radio is currently wired to the aux fuse panel. Remote speaker is attached to the DS headrest.

Thanks JoM,
Really cool, can't wait to put it on. btw, w/ a 6pin extension, you can wire the mic down at the center console (that's my plan anyway).

Mark,
the extension cable I've found at Radio Shack, $9.
6-conductor 'modular line cord'. it's just like a telephone line except a bit wider.
*note of warning- I asked W1JIM about offering a mic extension and he said it *might* cause noise or interference by adding a extension to the mic.
(W1JIM on ebay is the guy I bought my remote face cables from.) You can buy his cable and use that for the mic too.

I have been using a 6' mic extension for several months with no reports of noise or interference.

Beowulf, cool thx.
so where do you have the mic plug in (where on the center console)? The LX has a subwoofer in the way so I have fewer options w/ where to put the plug recepticle.
--------------------------------------
update-
I got my RAM parts in 1 day! Installed quick n' easy thanks to Jo Maoma's writeup
I also threaded a 2nd line for the mic- which plugs in down at the parking brake area
altho it may look like it, it does not interfere with the visors. there is more than enough clearance and adjustability.
I'm a sucker for super clean installs and this is perfect! it's a much better location too. big thanks to Jo Maoma!

I used a standard RJ12 coupler [F-F] (needs to have all 6-pins).
The 6' RJ-12 6-conductor phone cord goes from the head unit behind the dash, along the wiring channel on the front driver side floorboard, under the carpet, under the driver seat, and comes out from under the carpet by the e-brake. Then I use the coupler for the plug-in for the mic.
Sorry, no pics of that part of my install but this is what the coupler looks like.
