I'm using a Garmin GPS connected to my laptop which is running Ozi-Explorer with maps scanned in and then the lat and long input from the map data.

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx with laptop running OziExplorer software and Hema maps and UBD street directories.
Try the Electronic Toys Forum, there are a heap of threads there on GPS combos. __________________ 90 HZJ80 GXL, DTS turbo, 285/75R16 MTR's, 4" OME, Safari snorkel, ARB airlocker, ARB bullbar, 9500lb winch, ARB dual pivot rear bar, 39L Engel, water tank, dual batts, sliding drawers, cargo barrier, underbonnet shower, laptop, GPS, oziexplorer, etc.... 99 HZJ105R GXL, alloy bullbar, Safari snorkel, more to come.....watch this space.......... |

Lowrance 540c......... Here's the website:
http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Aut...GMBaja540c.asp I'm putting this in my Cruiser, and I have a second Lowrance hand held as a backup unit. I also bring a topo map and compass of the area I am traveling in if known. __________________ 2004 UZJ100 "El Rinoceronte" - Gotta pay to play...

I also have a Garman GPSMAP 60CSx.
There is a new chip out called the SiRF Star III, I believe. This chip is only in certain GPSes out there, including the one mentioned above. I'm sure it will soon be in most or all of them, but I would never invest in a GPS without this Chip or something smiliar. This chip works AWESOME. I used to lose signal the moment I hit tree cover and it was very frustrating. They were almost useless to me for hiking in the woods and now I never lose a signal when I'm outdoor or driving, no matter where I'm at, except for inside a tunnel, cave or mine....obviously. However, I can get a signal inside buildings many times. It's super sensative. The way to go. __________________ 1995 FZJ80, modified for regional expeditions. Click here for more... I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I have rigged mine up with an external antenna and a cig lighter plug in the 80 with a ram mount to hold it.
The external antenna makes the initial finding of satellites almost instantaneous and keeps the hold on them in trees/ gorges/ etc. The external power source is great to keep the GPS running all the time. No excuses for flat batteries now. I like the fact that the 60CSx has all of the features of the bigger units yet is still handheld for when you want to go hiking or use in the boat, etc. __________________ 90 HZJ80 GXL, DTS turbo, 285/75R16 MTR's, 4" OME, Safari snorkel, ARB airlocker, ARB bullbar, 9500lb winch, ARB dual pivot rear bar, 39L Engel, water tank, dual batts, sliding drawers, cargo barrier, underbonnet shower, laptop, GPS, oziexplorer, etc.... 99 HZJ105R GXL, alloy bullbar, Safari snorkel, more to come.....watch this space.......... |

I have the 60CSx as well. Very cool little unit.
I wanted a unit that could be used in the Cruiser, on my motorcycle, and on foot. Have used it more on my motorcycle than in the Cruiser so far and it has been great. __________________ norm '85 BJ70 - old yard decoration '89 BJ74 - newer yard decoration |
