Fj60 1hd-t
Never had time to clock 0 to 60 but in the end it was the fastest cruizer I ever drove.
The truck performed well for my customer from Vancouver Island to Bend Oregon. He never had to down shift once out of 5th on any of the climbs and was never putting his foot to the floor at all....... All in all, I must give a hudge thanks to Sheldon from G&S Cruisers for helping me out on the intake system, in the end it looked so factory you would not question aftermarket or original. Customer called tonight and was so pleased with the cruiser and its new drive train a paint job. Nice job and I bet the customer was thrilled driving home.
Apart from a 0-60 time a fuel consumption figure would have been interesting too with a 60 being lighter than a 80 Someone was asking if the 1HDT injector lines were interchangeable with a 1HZ because a drunk mechanic swore they were. From looking at that pic its very obvious that you shouldnt listen to drunk mechanics ![]()

Very nice Rob.
But please, next time you're almost ready to hand one of these beauties back to the customer, you've got to give us South Island guys a chance to pop up for a quick peek and rave. -Steve __________________ '90 HDJ81 for sale soon: '90 Trooper past: '76 FJ55 - more rust than steel; still miss it |

I will ask for a fuel consumption in the future, will post up later.
Next unit that gets finished I will try and get to Victoria for a visit. Actually the 45 with turbo 1HZ is still here awaiting better weather in Boston for deliver. I will have plates for it soon and will be driving it for a bit, maybe I will drive down for a visit in this rig. Thanks guys, he is tickled with the rig. 5K is a baseline install with no extras, we managed to bump this one up a couple more dollars with some add ons. A 12HT would of been much more simple to install, but nothing beats the power of the 1HD-T. Spoke with the mechanic in Oregon who is doing some other things like long range fuel tank, he was blown away by the power and he is a owner of a dodge diesel. Two or three 1HD-T owners are trying to band together and get a unit made to transmit the tach signal to the 60 series and gasser 80 series tachs. I would agree with Rick, the hood liner should be replaced. Please come visit, between cruisers I am restoring old iron at a shop, yep I am now a employee with flexability. Current frame off or unibody frame off is a 1966 Merc convertable, lots less rust than cruisers but not quite the same quality. Thanks BB and Mot, I put my all into it.
As with any first time project or even second time project, I would do things slightly different the next time (small things). As it is said, its the small things that count. BTW I can attest to driving through those passes that lead to Bend, more times than I could count in fact, and there are quite a few steep climbs that would really test a swap like that out.

Yep, thats the install, especiall with the 60, lotsa work goings into moving all the brake lines and fuel lines to the other side of the frame, quite a bit of electrical was also done to this particular truck.. Best thing is to do as much homework as possible for a swap, in this case the taces was vacume, need to either change to a manual case or wire in the electrics. Here is a trick I learned through the install, if you possition the engine just right you can flip the 2F fan shroud 180 degrees and move the lower drop over three inches for instant fan shroud. Been so long, haha sorry to bump an old thread like this. Just realized after doing a search on 1HD-T in a FJ60 that you had replied to me!!
I finally bought an 87 fj60 last year. Funny story, I bought it with the intention of having it as a great body for a project diesel swap. The head gasket went out on the gasser on my way home from buying it.. I would be really angry about the purchase, but the fact of the matter is that I don't care at all for the gutless gas engine the fj60 comes stock with, so I won't even bother changing out the headgasket. It's sitting for now.. unfortunately. I missed driving it in the winter wonderland. Now I'm really wanting to get started on it. You mentioned that a 12ht is really a whole lot easier, but the real question is if it's acceptable. I have always been a bit picky, and picking out an engine is no different. As far as projects go, I'd much rather have an easy one than a mind-bender. I continue to ponder whether it's better to go the 'easy' route with the 12ht or go all the way with a 1hd-t. I gather it costs quite a bit more to aquire a 1hd-t over a 12ht. I am however actively and thoroughly investigating importation of motors from Japan with my dad (who lives in Tokyo). Either way, however late it was, I replied again. Hopefully one day in (not too) distant future I'll be giving a testimonial about my new FJ60 Diesel Swap.. |

Lets see the numbers .. ( on the book )
12H-T making 135 HP @ 3500 and 231lb/p @ 2000 1HD-T making 168 HP @ 3600 and 268 lb/p @ 2000 The stock boost on 12H-T and 1HD-T around 8 PSI produce those numbers .. ( but I saw some stocks HD-T producing up to 10 PSI of boost ) Think in boost your 12H-T over 14 PSI and intercooled maybe you gonna get in the HD-T range with less complications in the tranny boell housing section. Just a note .. |

12H-T and 1HD-T both have a different "feel" (powerband). They both have been replaced with newer engines.

The 12H-T has been replaced. The 1HD-T just got some updates, a 24v head (1HD-FT) and some electronics etc (1HD-FTE) It is basicaly the same 4.2liter block.
