Master list of JDM importers to Canada

There has been so much talk of importers, good and bad, that I thought I'd start a list of them.

For now lets just come up with the list and leave the critique of them till later.

In alphabetical order...

DISCLAIMER NOTE: By saying below if they are registered, does not mean the others are not, only that the ones with registered notes came forward to say they are registered. Soliciting services from a curber is at your own risk.(BB)

I suspect that in very short order the cream will rise to the top of the list and the majority will be found to be IH8mud venders.

Staying out of the curber/good/bad/legit debate...That's a lot of free enterprise going on in a small market...

Something I hope all levels of Government recognize. If they believe their own propaganda that free enterprise is the engine that makes the financial world go round, I would "think" they would address issues when brought to their attention, and allow it to flourish.

Have another look at the first post in the thread. Your importer is already on the list and I asked that we save the critique for later.

I know there is more of these importers, post em up if you know of one that's not on the list.

Best to have a feed back thread where folk can give an opinion..... On the above.

Don't like grading, as who will be judge?

I have had excellent luck with Michael at Rising Sun imports.
I got my truck here and been happy with it, and Michael's help.

Also as we all know, Wayne at Luxury Imports works very hard too, and from what I can tell, does a top notch job.

I have also heard good things about Marko at Outback imports. However lately the quality of trucks on the website is going down. I see more and more underside rust in the photos, as well as heavily accessorized trucks.

These are the big 3 importers as I can tell.

As always, this is all just my opinion and experiences.
Actual millage may vary, etc.... blah, blah, blah

Cheers
Nick

Yup, I'm still developing the list and have amended the original list. Nobody knows of any other importers?

Wow that's 34 so far and it doesn't include the ones from Port Alberni, Smithers, or Cold Lake that I've heard about.

This list doesn't include the curbers who haven't even bothered to fake a company name but are selling week by week as private owners in the Buy and Sell, Autotrader etc.

http://heartland.toyota.ca/dwp/exper...home/index.jsp has had a couple Japanese trucks as well.

I created a website to put information about my truck on... but I'm a 'curber' not a company

Just looking at the list, and wondering if the ones licenced as "Wholesalers" sell to the general public. If they do and you have a problem are you protected by the Province issuing the license (such as AVMVIV)

Brownbear has agreed to clean this thread up as required and will be ruthless in axing posts that are inflammatory, libelous, or overly mean spirited.

Finally, there is a component to this discussion that is missing, thus far, and that is "What are the criteria for choosing a legitimate importer?" I think that deserves a thread of its own because, a shiny as a lot of these WebPages look, a bunch of them are private guys selling untested rigs and the buyer has little recourse should a rig turn out to be bad. Not all importers are created equal.

There was a 4WD Corolla that was parked at the local Toyota dealer ready to be picked up by its new owner. I looked at it extensively and would not hesitate to do business nor hold back in reccommending Outback Imports, if the Corolla was representitive of their product, they offer an excellent service.

Anyone can import vehicles, but not just anyone can sell them. In BC, Alberta, and Ontario you have to be a registered dealer and registered salesperson to sell cars - bottom line.

If you blur the distinction with - "I bought a truck from a guy who is not a registred dealer but I had a great experience with him" - that still doesnt make him a dealer, it makes him a curber.
True....but this is a list of who has imports and who bought from them, and if they had a good purchase experience...

This is not a thread on who is legal and who is not.. But those who are registered and fully legal, let us know we can put a registered dealer note next to your name in the list.

This list is to help people not get taken advantage of, or find what they are looking for. By doing so we can find out who had bad purchasing experinces or good ones.

I saw a 1990 HDJ81 at a place called Bonnybrook Auto Sales in Calgery. The salesman said that he and his partner were bringing in a lot of JDM vehicles of all makes. They also had Nissan Silva on the lot. The 80 was priced at 21900 and came with a 1 year 12000 km warranty and extended warrantys were available. He said they made them legal for Canada but I don't know what else they did in the way of PM. He advertises in the Auto Trader.

I guess I could start with my experiences. I have bought a couple of incomplete rigs from Wayne of Luxury Imports that Crusher's Rule had scavenged for parts. I got killer deals on both and both times they were unexpectedly delivered to my door at no charge. Both were sold as-is and there was no expectation of after sales service.

I helped my girlfiend shop for her BJ73 a couple of years ago and tried Lost Guide and Luxury Imports but neither had anything in our price range. Eric of HJ61.com had a BJ74 and I talked with him about it and even sent a buddy to look it over for us. I was unhappy with the representaion of the rig as well as the method of selling. He refused to show or sell it until he had all the interested buyers see it at a mall parking lot. We ended up buying from a private party who has brought in a few JDMs. The rig developed cooling problems on the way home and ended up requiring a new rad, water pump and t-stat. The seller did nothing to help us with the cost of these items and this is what I expected, buying from a private party or curber. We were aware that we would have little recourse if something went wrong.

I've purchased two JDM Cruisers, both from one importer, who no longer imports.

I've commented in general terms about what to expect when buying a JDM from an importer.

I'll post up Peter's quote from the other thread..

You get to test drive the truck before you buy it!!! The importers are buying off photo's and mechanics reports translated from Japanese. Wayne still hasn't recieved a truck knowing what's coming in the diffs. I remember his first round of trucks that he advertized before they arrived... Not a single one showed up as he said they would. He's receieved trucks with trannies that couldn't make the drive from Vancouver to Calgary, and DOA 24V air conditioners, and had one BJ74's t-case pile up 100 days after he sold it to the guy! With my own junk, I had to replace a clutch that went 2 months after I received the truck (importer or not, there's not much for warranty on a 15 yo truck), both have needed radiators, one needed a starter, the other a vacuum solenoid, and both are burning oil and really need an engine rebuild despite their low kms. With an importer, you greatly reduce your risk. Oh, not to mention insurance. Any idea what happens if the ship your truck is on sinks while it's in transit? It's gone. Bu-bye. Well, I suppose you could have contacted Lloyds of London for insurance, as they're the only one's that will insure that vehicle for you while it's in transit. Risk.

Big end bearings. Big end of the connecting rods. Have failures of the bearings due to faulty metal and or lubrication. Tho better have someone like Greg_b describe it. I am only a parrot.

People mention this as many legit importers change out the bearings with new upon arrival. Curbers do not know what these are..Or many other shops. So it needs to be part of the budget when you compare prices from diffrent sources.

If someone is cheaper....you ask why??
