I have just completed a rebuild of a 12HT and installed it in to my 1985 HJ60 2nd owner only cruiser. It took me about 4mths, a lot longer than expected, but was on budget and so far has exceed my expectations. Its only done 300 km's and i'm currently running it in, but looking forward to tuning it further for a great touring and towing rig.

This build wouldn't have been possible with out the constant help and guidance of my best mate Tony (actually second bast man at my up comming wedding), and a mechanic of 30 plus years, with an awesome shed.

Back story.

After last years surf trip to western oz from the east coast, about 14,000 km round trip, (8700 miles for the rest not into the metric system), the original 2H had only 290 km's and was in fantastic condition, but was just too slow for the highway and i was thinking of selling the 60 for something more modern, but couldn't go past the style, and go anywhere reliability.
Plus good 60's are getting rare even in oz, as most have rusted away.
When a bloke from work wanted to know if i knew anyone that wanted a 60 for parts, (hadn't passed rego inspection for chassis rusted), i original said no but just asked out of curiosity what engine it had, his reply changed my mind, and after some home work on the costs, i bought his red cruiser including the running 12HT.

Removing 12HT

As the red cruiser formally the big red bus (had travel aus several times) and had looked like it had done a little bit of beach work.
Everything was rusted on including the bull bar, so we oxy'd it off and ripped in and got the motor out and stripped down.

I have attached some photos, and will post full story over the next week or two, as i get time.

Looking forward to full story :D

and nice job on upgrading your 60 with best engine it ever came with :P

It took us a full day, to remove the engine and strip it down to the basic long motor.
We stripped off the pump, injectors and turbo, putting them aside for a complete rebuild, by respective specialists.

We took out the radiator support panel, radiator, and disconnected all hoses and wiring.

We prob should have taken more notice of all the vaccum lines for the 12HT shut down and idle up functions for the air cond, etc as i'm still nutting that out now.
We unbolted the bell housing from the gearbox and using an over-head hoist lifted the engine enough to clear the lower radiator support panel and push the red truck away. We had a trolley supporting the gearbox. We found it easier to remove the engine without the gearbox.

The differances between the 2H and the 12HT i found so far are.

1) different injection pump, and engine fuel lines.

2) throttle cable - slightly shorter and different connection to pump actuator, just used the complete HJ61 cable arrangement.

3) 2 x fuel lines, supply and return v the 2h supply only. I used the tank pick-up and fuel lines from the HJ61, it bolts to same locations in chassis 60 chassis, had to drop the tank to access the sender/pick up out of the tank.

4) Wiring, the 12HT is very basic as it dosn't have the EDIC arrangement for electically shutting off of the fuel, as in the 2h. The 12HT uses a vaccum set that closes a butterfly in the intake to shut down the engine.
Also no glow plug arrangement, just uses pre heat screen.

5) Engine mounts, we use the HJ61 mounts to the exisiting chassis HJ60 engine mounting locations, there is a left and right side, good to mark them, when removing. I didnt.

6) Different sized belts; the 12HT must have a larger harmonic balancer, still have new belts only suitable for the 2H.

7) CT - 26 turbo, something the 2h needed from day one, and also direct injection.

8) The sumps are interchangeable, as the 12HT sump was too rusted to use.

Best tools so far

Next job was to start cleaning up all nuts and bolts. A 6 inch bench wire wheel was the best tool for the whole engine build, as cleaning rust bolts and threads was made easy.

Air rattle gun and single hex sockets, made stripping rusted bolts that hadn't been touched for 450,000 km's since mister toyota did them up, easy and quick.

More photos to come.

I have some more photos, just need to work out how to attach them, as i have max my limit already with the 3 photos i have posted. It can't be too hard, just that its dinner time now.

hey Fasteddie34. im doing the same conversion 1983 HJ60 swapping the 2H for a 12H-T. having problems with the engine shut off. would you be able to contact me with your mobile number im in NSW.

For the vac lines go to toyodiy.com.... it may give you some info to work it out. When I did my rebuild I tried to keep the vac lines as intact as possible. It looked like a mess to try to work out if they were all disconnected.

Hey guys, sorry to bump this thread but what is the difference between 2H and 12HT injector pumps? Is anything inside them interchangeable or is it not worth it? I may be in the market for a replacement and there's about a $500 dollar difference between what I can fin locally.
