Oil Sending Unit (3B 85 BJ70) wire question

Hope someone will help. I am about to put the head back on, but decided to change a water pump and an oil sending unit. Black one wire connector attaches to yje unit. But I have anoother black wire that doesn't have a connector or a terminal. Question is it a ground wire and where should it be attached?

Thanks,
Alex

my wiring diagram shows a single black wire from the gage to the oil px sending unit.

water temp is Y-G colour.

if you have a extra wire just hanging out I would trace it back to where ever it goes to find out what it is. Or isolate it( so it doesn't touch gnd) and finish up and start the truck. Find out what isn't working.

Good luck!

my 85 has a oil sender with 2 wires. one on the center of it and then it has a flat terminal on it too. was there an issue with the stock one you had?

The wire is coming out from the same harness as the wire with a black connector. It was like this since I bought her many years ago, but now I would like to see where this wire should be attached.

Thanks,
Alex

My diagram shows only one on both of those senders. It must have a ground wire attached to the outside.

Ring that misc wire to grn(with a multimeter), see if it is a grn. To do that set you meter to ohms and attach to the wire and put your other lead to the engine for a ground. If you get 0 ohms or round about you have a ground wire.

Then if its not, turn on the key and see if has power with your multi meter. with your meter set to volts. and your other probe still on the engine for a ground.

Wes,

I realy didn't have any issues with the old one. I just wanted to replace the original one because I have lots of room before I put the head back on this weekend. I ordered one from C-Dan and yes, it does have a flat terminal, but it doesn't have anything that I can attach the other wire to it. Seems that my oil pressure gauge is working. Question, the one on the center, is it soldered or have a round terminal with a small bolt?

Thanks,
Alex

Do you know what is the purpose or function of it?
