HELP-3B whine

When I went out into the desert today I noticed a new whine coming from my engine (1985 BJ70, 3B, 12V, 160k miles).
The whine is clearly adible around 2000rpm, barely audible at 1500, and barely audible at 2500 and higher (probably due to other engine noise). It almost sounds like a turbo spooling up, excpt that I have none.
I have not noticed this before, and I am sure I would have.
It is hard to tell where exactly the noise is coming from, seems like the front of the engine.
oil pressure is good, cooling is fine, waterpump is new, fanclutch is new, charging is fine, belts are new.
any guesses as what the problem coulf be ? a bearing somewhere?

This is driving me crazy...help please!
thanks
Jan

+my fan makes a noise similar to that but it always has. Ithink it has something to do with the fluid coupling

Jan,
get your wife to throttle up the engine and you listen wiht the hood up, you might be able to sense which area the sound is coming from.
next you could remove the belts and spin the pullies by hand and see if any have resitiance..
cheers

I just tried the throttle thing, thank you wayne. It is hard to locate the sound standing in front of the engine-too much noise. next I will take the belts off...
thanks, cheers,
Jan

drove the truck to work this morning, and there was no whine anymore. the drive is long enough for it to warm up completely. does this mean anything?
thanks guys,
J

Mine was intermittant too. In my case the intake manifold was slightly loose. Lately we've come across a vew guys whose gasket is upside down and it restricts airflow slightly. It would be an easy mistake to make and might have even happened in the factory.

Good Luck

Jan,

If you still have the problem bring it by the shop this weekend and we can figure it out.

Cheers,

Michael

Could it be a water pump giving up?

I doubt that, the pump is brandnew from Toyota, has about 1000 miles on it.
thanks

Have you checked your belt tensions? Could be that simple maybe?

I have not checked them with a scale, but the belts are brandnew, and tense. I'll recheck with a scale, thanks
Jan
