Shifting da H55F

Although I really enjoy driving the BJ70, I don't have a good feel for shifting from 2nd gear through 4th. It seems that the engine especially lugs when shifted into 3rd as the RPM's really drop. Guess I'm shifting too early? (running 235's) Didn't think the diesel was supposed to be revved up much. Thanks, Bret

you can shift the 3B up to 4000 rpm, i usually like to shift from 2nd into 3rd at about 3000-3500 rpm since there is quite a gap between those gears...
cheers

Yes, there is quite a gap between 2nd and 3rd. I've been shifting even before 2500 RPM Thanks much.

My 13BT doesn't sound too happy after 3k RPM...although redline is well above that. I usually shift at around 2400 RPM...but I guess a TDI engine is different. Of course shifting at a high RPM will affect fuel economy.

3500 isn't that high and yes it does affect fuel economy (but then you know i really do not care too much about the milage as long as it is still better than a gasser)
the old 3Bs i used to drive always got shifted high from 2nd to 3rd. the 1HZ likes hte higher rpms and once that PZ gets here i will find out if it is true that they shift closer to 5000 rpm max...

(wintery day here so just hanging by the computer getting some paper work out of the way...)
cheers

The mines found that the PZs lasted way longer when they dialed the no load RPM govenor from 4900 back to 4150 like the 3Bs.

I find that there is rarely a situation where the engine is serving me better at a speed higher than 3500. I can nearly always grab another gear at that point.

that is true Bruce but i am wondering if i am going to like the longer legs that the higher rpms will allow...

SO when I shift from 2nd to 3rd that really is the engine bogging a bit, seems like it is universal slop. Still gonna replace them, as there prolly orginal and feel kinda sloppy

I never really wind into first gear . . . I shift into second quickly; however, I wind out second a good bit as I have always known there is a big jump to third gear. It's no big deal. I also have noticed it more since I've put 265/70R17's on both of my 70's. If I don't really wind out second, I feel it bog down. These are not close-ratio BMW gearsets folks. LOL. There has to be a price paid for having such a low first and second gear.
