Oil stains
Hey guys,
If I leave my 70 in one place on the driveway for a week, I get a dark oil spot about 1 inch across on the concrete. It sure looks like engine oil (sooty) but I haven't really looked under there to find a source. Is there a list of usual suspects for this sort of thing (ie rear main seal etc)? It's really nothing serious, and it doesn't always do it, but I'm really anal about my driveway...hate scrubbing at those gawdamn stains. BTW, love the new pimp smilie! ...where's the "ho" smilie?

Dunno if this is the same on your 3B II, but I am hating the oil cooler/filter housing area right now, especially the end by the exhaust manifold/downpipe. I hear somebody say sometime this is quite common--I bet the heat from the exhaust kills the gasket there (should there be a heat shield?).
But this could also be your crankcase vent tube (?), or any other gasket. Hard to tell until you actually get under there and check it. Is there a full gasket kit for the oil cooler housing for a 3B?? Where to get?? 4wheelAuto?? That and the rear transfer case output.
I open up large cardboard boxes and put them in lengthwise under the cruisers so oil drips don't get into the garage floor. If outside on the driveway, I use disposable baking pans made of foil, weigh them with a couple of rocks so the wind doesn't blow them away. Dave |

It's definitely foward of the bellhousing, as I park nose up on a pretty good slope and the little stains appear directly under the pan that sits under the oil drain plug....hmmm....

Could be just as simple as needing a new washer thingy on your drain plug. Do we change these at every oil change as recommended by Porsche (I used to have an '85.5 944)?

betcha its just your blow-back tube dripping. Mine has always done it and I have no leaks at all on my rig...like dave says, just throw some cardboard under it

it can not be the blow by tube since on a 3B II it goes into the intake like a gasser does...

In another twist, mine actually hangs off the side of the block and dumps overboard as these guys say. It's a steel tube pointed straight down with nothing at the end. __________________ MOOSE SOLD HER - SOMEDAY SOON JDM's...THEY SAVED THE BEST FOR THEMSELVES!! |

Moose, what manufacturing month is your rig? I'm not sure they put 3BII in until the '89 model year. What makes you think yours is not a plain old 3B?

Rotary pump came as early as '82. Its not an indication of a 3BII. Eight bolts holding the flywheel on is but that's a bit hard to see from the outside. Perhaps the blowby tube is the external clue. __________________ Rocky Mountain Land Cruiser Association TLCA # 5513 '87BJ74, '86BJ70, '78FJ45, '53M100, '90M101cdn I support our Troopies |

We thought we had a 3BII core, till this discussion came up a while ago (Moose's injector issue), then looked closer into it, and it was indeed a 3B, with Rotory pump...which seems to be the norm for the JDM 3B's after some point in the early 80's.
Chances are the oil drip is from your blowby tube Moose. You can direct the blowby tube into the air intake pipe, post air filter. gb |

I'm not sure I've ever seen a JDM 3B with an inline pump. There are two BJ46s around ('81 and '84) and they both have rotary pumps. Charla's '85 BJ73, also rotary. I think Toyota saved the inline pumps for the "third world" or those countries (like Canada) with low quality diesel. I don't understand why the 13BTs didn't get a rotary. Might be too big a pain to modify for boost compensation etc. __________________ Rocky Mountain Land Cruiser Association TLCA # 5513 '87BJ74, '86BJ70, '78FJ45, '53M100, '90M101cdn I support our Troopies |
