On power, Amps, Alternators and the 3B....

Hey there guys, has anyone come up with any bright ideas for a high output alternator in a 3B? I have an 82 BJ60 12V, and unfortunately the alternator is piggybacked with a vacuum pump..... Has anyone tackled this issue before? Are there any good alts out there with a built in vac pump?

The only idea I have managed to come up with so far is to make a new bracket and mount a totally new alternator to the system and just disconnect the crapy 30 amp OEM guy.... But this seams like an awful waste of space and effort.....

Any ideas?

You could rip off the stock alternator, and put on an electric vacuum pump

How about 2 Alternators? This a 100amp GM alternator brand new it cost me $100 for the whole setup.

Another option is a GM alt and a Powerstoke vac pump. Basically no limit to power of the aftermarket GM alts. Saw one recently that claimed 750 Amps!

You CAN have the alternator rewound to provide higher output. This should satisfy any reasonable demand for power.

Hey Thanks guys!

I kinda liked the idea of Dual alternators, but dont you have to have them balanced (IE same output) if you hook them both up at the same time?

Im betting 750amps would run quite a nice winch

Hey Diesel Dude, for the hardpoint on that bracket, did you just drill into part of the block?

If you don't have A/C there will be unused bosses on the block where the A/C would have been mounted.

btw. If you don't want the OEM altenator/vacuum pump PM me!

Anything wrong with just installing a good inverter and then using that to run whatever electric appliance you bring to the camp grounds ? After camping you could always bring your stuff back home and continue useing them at home.

The second alternator will only charge when it needs to it keeps the system charged there is no need for a voltage regulator. As cruiser_guy said I made a bracket that used the A/C mounting spot.

anymore discussion on this issue

i am in the midst of trying to increase the amp's on my trucks- 55 amps on a pickup and 60 amps on the 3B seems rather paltry

i had discussions with Rick @ broadway Electric in San Diego about retro - ing a new Stator and Rectifier- rectifier is the concern -

as I would like to keep things as neet under the bonnet as possible and as much as I like the idea of 2 alternators - .......

i wonder what of the Isuzu NPR alternator - 80 amps and a vacuum pump
is a decent option - size and mounting issues

anyone know ??
