canadien BJ42 importation in to CALIFORNIA questions/advice
I imported a 1981 canadian BJ42 into California in October. I registered it within 3 days and recieved plates for it that day. Then I recieved a letter from CA DMV stating that the vehicle needs to comply with US emision standards and specifically a letter from Toyota stating so. I need help and advice from anyone who has imported a Canadian Toyota diesel into CA. THANK YOU!

Fortunately you've already got plates for your BJ and by next year the emission standards compliance will no longer be required by federal law because any vehicle 25 years or older is exempt. I don't know, perhaps California will choose, or has chosen, to adopt a more stringent state law in which case you will need to do something. In any case, Toyota Motor Sales in Torrance CA has the forms that the DMV wants you to process. The fax number for Toyota is 310 468-7814, or you could call directory info for their phone number.

Considering that this is the second time we've heard of California DMV requiring more than the standard Registered Importer paperwork I've got an idea for other Californians considering the importation of a Canadian diesel cruiser in the future, namely: have your importer title the vehicle in some other state first.

WOW! I just got off the phone with CA DMV and they admited to me that they had made SEVERAL MISTAKES interpreting my importation paperwork regarding Federal Motor Vehicle Safetey Standards and EPA Emissions Standards.
I'm not going to admit victory until I recieve my Title and its in my hand, however besides this hic-up, they whole process went smoothly. I would highly recommend using a Registered Importer if you're going to bring a diesel into the US. I used CARCO USA out of Bellingham, WA/Vancouver B.C.. The people there are extremely friendly and went out of there way to help me out. They even met me at the border and I followed them to there B.C. office to finalize the transaction. His name was Cody Darby and I highly recommend using them as a RI. I can get anyone his number if they plan on bringing in a Cruiser from Canada. Sorry for the stupid post earlier, but I was just nervous and pissed because I thought I was not going to be able to keep my diesel cruiser. CHEERS! PAUL |

Cody is a great guy and will help you out through the whole process. At least you won't have to deal with the CA DMV.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know if a Toyota vehicle with a 1HD-T has been sold or registered in CA? And that Toyota verifies that it meets CA standards?
Outside of Landcruisers, I do not know thw applications of this engine. Bus, Delivery van???? Thanks. This post is really starting to worry me..... Is Cali just being difficult? What are the chances of registering in a different state? I hope I don't get the same hassle when I try to register my BJ44 in Tennessee. Bummer Dude!
