60 and BJ70 part compatibility
Hello, in the manual of repair, all the parts seem the same ones, which are it really?
Disc rotor and brakes pads? Caliper ? Drum and brakes pads ? Alternator ? Shocks ? Shackles and springs bushings ? Wheels clearance ? Damper shock ? Brake master ? Clutch ? Clutch slave ? and the biggest question... the T-Case ? ...and, what other part ? Not a lot of strore (NAPA, Canadian Tire, ...) selling 70 part... so I need to figure if I can buy some parts for a 70 like a 60 ? __________________ BJ42 1982 * The Primitive Beast - wvo BJ70 1985 * The Green Machine - wvo some say The Mighty Pickle ! come on ! 1992*Corolla*All-trac* The Quiet Spirit Si je dois aller en enfer... ce sera en Landcruiser (Canadian french guy (Québécois)... sorry for my english ! ) Last edited by David*BJ70; 02-01-05 at 10:09 AM. |

I've seen 60 and 70 shocks listed as the same and then companys like OME will have different shocks listed due to load. But they are of the same fittings. Some items like a brake master for that will even cross over to a 4runner. I believe all the items you have above are the same between a bj60 and bj70 of the same vintage. The list you have are interchangable with a few exceptions.
Watch the voltage. all cdn spec BJ60s are 12v. Only '85 BJ70s are 12V . '86 and '87 are 24V Shackles and bushings are interchangable but the rear fixed pins are unique to the 70 series. Clutch slave is the same as a '84 or '85 BJ60 or '86 or '87 HJ60 but not earlier. BJ70s have vacuum assist. The t-case from a '83 or '84 BJ60 is the same as a '85 BJ70 The t-case in a '86 or '87 BJ70 is unique in Canada but can be replaced (downgraded) with one from an '83 or '84 BJ60. The internals and back half of a '86 or '87 HJ60 case will be the same as a '86 or '87 BJ70 __________________ Rocky Mountain Land Cruiser Association TLCA # 5513 '87BJ74, '86BJ70, '78FJ45, '53M100, '90M101cdn I support our Troopies |

You have to use the front half from the 70 but if you swap the early gears (from the 60) into your case you'll have a lower low range. __________________ Rocky Mountain Land Cruiser Association TLCA # 5513 '87BJ74, '86BJ70, '78FJ45, '53M100, '90M101cdn I support our Troopies |

... lower low range. How can I figure that... now I have 3.70 ... so can that could be something like 4.11 or 4.?? ... ?? __________________ BJ42 1982 * The Primitive Beast - wvo BJ70 1985 * The Green Machine - wvo some say The Mighty Pickle ! come on ! 1992*Corolla*All-trac* The Quiet Spirit Si je dois aller en enfer... ce sera en Landcruiser (Canadian french guy (Québécois)... sorry for my english ! ) Last edited by David*BJ70; 02-27-05 at 04:54 PM. |

Supposedly there is a 6.1 R&P set that fits the cruiser diff. Off a Toyota Stout or something. Dave |

I know he was talking about T-Case gears... but my question was not realy clear anyway. (You know... it's french in my head ! )I'm juste try to figure what this difference can make on my drive train. So I will make my question different : If I put the front half from a 1982 T-case in my actual 1985 T-case I will be able to put bigger (33-35) without stress my drive train... not like running 35 on a 3.70 ratio. Hope it's more clear now ... (I don't realy whant to make this ... just for the information); __________________ BJ42 1982 * The Primitive Beast - wvo BJ70 1985 * The Green Machine - wvo some say The Mighty Pickle ! come on ! 1992*Corolla*All-trac* The Quiet Spirit Si je dois aller en enfer... ce sera en Landcruiser (Canadian french guy (Québécois)... sorry for my english ! ) Last edited by David*BJ70; 02-28-05 at 07:08 AM. |

I'm not really sure what the older front t-case half will do really. Nor would it help anything in high range. What's more, if your BJ70 is 10/85 or older, the idler shaft would be incompatible with the '82 front half. If you are running larger tires, you can consider running Marks4WD's 1.08/3.08 transfer gears, or cheaper, go for higher diff ratios.

actually the lower gears do make a big difference.
if you work out the numbers by switching the gears in the case you end up with the same result (in low range) as putting 4.88 gears in the 3rd member... this does make turning 35" tires effortless when going down the trail... on the highway it makes no difference at all since it is still 1-1 high... from what i have seen of Marks gears, they scream like a banshee at highway speeds and unless you are into rock crawling they are over kill for the average trail.... cheers __________________ pulling this info out of my ass so take it with a pound of salt "People are poor because they don't spend money wisely, tough sh!t !!! However, now I've heard that they are making them in a helical cut gear so they are as quiet as any other gear....so I've heard. I think Greg B has a set, maybe he could comment further on the noise level. Craig. __________________ Sadly no longer owning a 70 1993 HDJ81 TLCA # 13682 |

I think Dave meant 10/85 or *newer* You don't want to use the four speed (82) front case half on the back of your five speed tranny. Your '85 t-case front will mate up fine with the 82 gears and rear case half. Its a pretty easy job. I can't remember for sure but I think the companion flanges changed in that period so you'll have to swap the rear one from the old case if you use the rear t-case half. As Wayne said the differnence between 1.99 and 2.27 is significant. __________________ Rocky Mountain Land Cruiser Association TLCA # 5513 '87BJ74, '86BJ70, '78FJ45, '53M100, '90M101cdn I support our Troopies |

I have the 1.08/3.08 Marks4WD gears in my 40, the difference in high range is noticeable in the hills. Before I could not keep 55 mph in 5th gear going up certain hills around my house (NV4500, Chevy 350, 37"), now I can accelerate to 60-62 mph. Dave |
