i am installing a pre turbo thermocouple on a 12ht. where is the best place to install it? there is vane at the center of the entry point to the turbo, i am thinking of placing the thermocouple on the rear side of the vane, the thinking is, that is the hotter side of the manifold. what do you think?
1982 HJ 47, 19' feet bumper to bumper, 11' foot wheelbase, 6.5' wide, 12ht engine, 5 speed tranmission, intercooler, 60 and 17 gal fuel tank, pre turbo pyro meter, donaldson 900 cfm air filter, 3.5" down pipe; installing now Diamond Axel, air springs, 85" total wide (with tires)
I would hope the exit temperature across all your 6 cylinders is roughly equal. It's a bit annoying having that vane down the middle, but i think if you plumb the thermocouple in either side it will be ok. As long as it's close to the entry of the turbo's turbine wheel should be good. The probe on my 1HD-FT is currently post turbo, so drilling and tapping the exhaust manifold is on my "to do list"! I'm very aware of my post-turbo EGT readings now, after driving with that configuration for the last 12 months, but i too would much rather see my pre-turbo temps.
