HJ60 stock Seperator question...

My filter light came on signalling that the water seperator on the frame is full. So i followed procedure according to the manual and tried draining it. I had about 3/4 of a tank of fuel so i figured i would not need to use the breather. I loosened the drain plug and fluid started to come out. I let it drain for over ten minutes of constant flow and it showed no signs of stopping so i tightened it up again. The fluid smells strongly of diesel, which is expected i guess, but is it supposed to stop coming out after a while? Oh and the light still remains on....what am I doing wrong?

thanks

trusting that damn light.

I would suspect you have a short somewhere in your system. Is the water in fuel light the only one that is on? (no glow plug or alt light?) Next time collect the diesel you drain. You should be able to see the water in the fuel if there was actually enough to turn the sensor on. And all you have to drain is what's in that housing.

It is the orange filter light on the dash that came on. The the alt light has had the bulb removed because it was always on since the motor swap, and the glow plugs are also wired to a manual switch so that light isn't on either.

I figured in 10-15 minutes at the rate it was going, the conatiner should empty. thats why i tightened it back up because i thought it was all just fuel that I was draining out or something....Is it supposed to stop coming out when the canister is empty?

nope...as I am lead to believe, all that container does is allow a place for the water to seperate (water on the bottom, deisel on top) That's it. It doesn't really "collect" water by any means.

I do know that on my old HJ60 the alt, glow, and filter light would come on and it usually meant a charging problem of some sorts. Usually a change in brushes on the alt fixed it. Or a resolder of the glow plug relay. But it was never water in the fuel. EVER.

With your other systems not hooked up (or lights undone) I would sugesst you may look there first.

I experience that kind of problem. Like the Dude say, maybe is your alternator ? That was my problem. I change my alt. and the problem gone. Take a look.

My alt is putting out great charge. I haven't had a hard start since the batteries were replaced and my volt meter constantly displays well over 24 volts. I am nearly positve my alt is fine...

EDIT: glow plugs are also in good working order. I have started the truck in temps as low as -10 deg F and after 5-8 secs on the plugs it starts instantly every time.
