Speaking of Rob coming through in a pinch.... I was reviewing the records on my BJ42 and saw that when the vac pump and alternator went last summer and the PO had the truck worked on at the Toy dealer in Nanaimo, they sourced a good used 3B alternator from a BJ70 from none other than Radd Cruisers. Nice to know I have a Radd truck, at least partly. But... are these alternators no longer made? D'oh!

They are still available at some unreal price, I think the vaume pump is something like 1100.00.

Prolly over 2K for the complete unit, so when you see good used ones for 800.00 you better jump on it.

I have one 24 volt unit left and no twelves.

vacuum pump is $950 and the alternator is $350 so $800 is a bit steep for used. i sell the used setups for $500 after all you can not tell if they will last 6 months or 5 years.
also if you buy new the problem won't reoccure for 300,000++.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but..... at these prices, I don't want to replace this system again--is there any preventative maintenance one could do, or is there anything to look out for to make sure they last? Or was that probably the original on this truck and after 400k kms it was time?

Armstrong...<shiver> i am surprised they are still in business, they have been gouging their customers for 20 years...
as for prventive maintainence, did you pull yours apart and check the splines? there should be no wear at all, if there is then the days are numbered on the unit. it seems that oil changes can make a difference on the longivity as well as clean oil lines...
just a suggestion

Has anybody ever tried fitting a vacuum pump off a 2H or a 2L(T) onto a 3B alternator? They look awfully alike.

You know what, I got my last unit off of Sheldon and it was off a I think a BJ70 which I think is compatable with a 74?

My question to you guys is the 13BT or 12HT have the same built into the engine vacume pump as the 1HZ???
