I've seen that model van here on the Island, just north of Duncan. Looks like a Mars Rover.

I just did a test run on mine and got 10.4/100Km (around 22.5 mpg). That is without correcting for the 31x10.50 tires.... so just a little bit better. 88 hj60. mostly stock

Hello,

With my BJ60 I typically got 9.5 to 10L per 100K.
9.5 driving miss daisy (100kph with light foot)
10L at 110kph with a heavy foot in hills.

That was running 31" BFG AT Tires.
That was also correcting for my speedo/odo being out.

Cheers,
Nick

I have had as many as 900km's on a tank (20 gallons) but that was taking it easy and I was pretty dry when I filled up again.

In my BJ70 before turbo and runing 29"s with 3.7's, I got 8.8 L/100 kms on the highway or 26.5 mpg (US).

With the turbo, and runing 33"s and 4.11's (I go much faster now) I get about 11.25 l/100 kms or 21 mpg (US).

Craig.

Looks like the B engines are the most fuel efficient of the big cruisers.
My 1HZ after 3-4 tanks of diesel is averaging 13-14 litres per 100klms or approx 21 mpg imp of stop start city driving with 5 sp 4.11 and 33s

This is a little conservative as I cant fill up at a bowser due to the old unleaded fuel restriction device on the tank inlet and I believe my odometer is giving me less klms than Im really doing.
The engine is also only 2000klms old so it still has some loosening up to do
Hopefully I will end up with getting 23-24 imp mpg in the city.

Maybe we should all do an accurate reading for all our diesels and put it up as a sticky for future and current diesel heads who want to know "How much fuel will my new diesel banger use?
This would need to include an accurate weight of your vehicle and other factors such as tyre size and transmission/diff ratios engine mods and city/highway cycle.

I havent corrected for tire diameters yet, but last tank I got 560 kms on 67litres, which would be about 8.4 l per 100 kms, but I've got 255 85 16's on it, so my mileage is actually a fair bit better.

what's stock tire diameter on an 87 bj70?

I'm pretty ok with that mileage.

cheers,
ryan

Calculations and charts and tables and guessing aside, the ONLY way to accurately measure your speedo and odometer is by using a GPS.

Drive at 100 kph on the GPS, and see what your speedo is saying. If it says 105 kph, you are 5% out. Therefore 60 kph indicated is actually 63 kph, and so forth. When you fuel up and look at your odometer, multiply (or divide) your distance on that tank by your percent out and voila...exact numbers.

Sorry if I seem like I'm dumbing this down, but when I hear
"well, I'm running bigger tires, so my mileage is a bit better that what is indicated" it bugs me.

Craig.

thanks . tho considering how windy the roads are here, I don't find my theoretical speed through a @&@&@&@&ing mountain to be all that helpful.

I've done the calculations before, for my other cruiser. this truck, I'm only on my second tank of fuel since buying it, so it's a tad early to be rounding out to the 14th decimal point.

and not to dumb it down for you , but that was a

no worries lumpy, I take everything personal before the first cup of coffee....

back to fuel, I get 27-31 mpg in my Bj40 ( 3b, h55, turbo, 411, 255's) made a trip up island a while back and got the best mileage I've ever had, and I was towing a trailer at the time....blew me away.

I figger this bj70 gets a little worse, but it's heavier so I'm ok with that.

cheers,
ryan

its amazing how much speed makes a difference, especially in a 60 brick. Usually i got about 75-80mph in the interstates and get about 21mpg. But on a recent trip to URE i drove around 65-70mph on the hwy. Average for the tank was 23mpg, which INCLUDED a full day of wheeling!

Did anyone notice the new FJ Cruiser with the AT transmission is rated 21 mpg city, 27 highway. This is imperial of course, but that's pretty good for a 4 liter V6 with some balls behind it.
This is around the same fuel mileage as my BJ.

Mike.

I have an 87 HJ60, 2H, H55, stock tires and I get a consistent 25.5 MPG Imperial. The 86 HJ60, 2H, auto gets around 21.5 MPG Imperial. Auto Trannies generally take 20 percent off fuel mileage from my understanding.

For the US folks, subtract 20 percent for MPG US.

actually with the lock up torque converter the milage difference should be much less...
you might want to do a compression test...
cheers
