5 speed question

Guys, sometimes I see H55 or H55f, is there a difference?

Does anyone know anyhing about the H50? Its the 5sp 2 wd gearbox in a Coaster or Dyna.
It has gear linkages ,column or floorshift, to suit the forward control driving position and an extension housing on the rear.

It looks as if you could put a landcruiser transfer case and diffs and turn the coaster or dyna into a 4x4 with minimul effort.
They are also fitted with B,H,1HZ,1HD-T and 1KZ variants and they are already SOA

If yours has the split case then it's the same thing.

Never seen one, but my tranny manual also covers the H50. It looks like it has its own specific extension housing where the 5th gear resides, so at least to mate it with the standard split transfer, one would have to locate the extension from an H55 or a later H41/2. The funky shifter linkages might work for somebody wishing to keep a column shifter though.

Let me take that statement back. The tranny repair manual refers to the 4 speeds as the "H41" and the "H42", and it calls the 5 speeds the "H50" and the "H55f", as if the f designation makes a difference. However seeing that the manual covers several models (H41, H42, H50 and H55f) and it does not cover an "H55", I think either the H55 does not exist or if it does, it is a substantially different transmission or an unproduced prototype.

marks 4x4 adaptors uses a dyna 5 speed (don't know if it's the h50) as a heavy duty upgrade to the hilux (minitruck) 5 speed. people with cruisers run it into hilux dual transfers in aust.

"It's not all the same. Not a direct bolt-up. You can find them in
model BU Dyna trucks of early to late-mid 80's vintage. If you find
one with an H50 gearbox, then keep the whole thing, because that box
has a 5.71:1 first gear ratio and a 21% overdrive. Sweet. You're
looking for a 3.4l Hino, which was also used in fork lifts, and used
to power reefer trailers. Look in the yellow pages under 'trucks'
and look for a Hino dealer. Ask around."

Maybe this is why,I got it off an old LCMA sp? post from 97'

Oz listers, are you sure the unit Marks4WD uses for the conversion is the iron (H50) unit and not the aluminium unit? Note the Oz spelling They talked about switching rear output housings and "gear selectors" from a Hilux.

This pic from their website seem to show an R15x like housing, not anything like the iron H55f transmission:

Your right Beanz, this maybe the newer R452 that is used in the Dyna 100,150 behind the 3 liter 5L diesel.
I did a search last night, there are about 4-5 dyna gearboxs, even more if you count the ones that blur into Hinos
There is also a 6 sp that bolts onto a 15BT

Sorry to dig up an old post, but I have new info...

Toyota adds an "F" at the end of their transmission names to denote it is for a 4 wheel drive. Since there is no H55 for a 2wheel drive, there is only an H55f but no H55. The other H series 5 speed trannies are also used in Dyna trucks, the H50 and the H53, which are 2WD trucks.

For those of us with 4 speeds, does the build plate in the engine compartment read H42F under transmission or just H42?

Dave any info on what the 2wd ,yes 2wd ,45 series used.
Im guessing but I think they would have used the H55f with the dyna extension and the dyna diff housing which come with a centred diff and has the same track as a 40 series.

We got some in 84 but I cant find a reference to them anywhere and all the local ones are gone or converted to 4x4.

Landrover also did the 2WD thingy a few years earlier.

Sorry, Ross, I have no info on 2WD 45 series, but there was a SWB FJ42 which was 2WD. You guys have seen the aluminum blanking plate for the transfer case front output on SOR's site, so these rigs have a transfer case with no front output ???

The H50 and the H53 were used in some Dyna 150 trucks if I understand it correctly. The rear portion where the 5th gear is housed and the shifter plate may be entirely different. But the front could be the same, making it easy to swap in an H55f with a transfer case. Ahhh, the beauty of Toyota parts interchangeability.....

Thanks, Greg. So I guess the H42 may be used in 2WD apps too.
