Replacing the Diaphragm

Have you done it in place without moving anything? well except the EDIC arm? if you are part of that Elite, BE PROUD. lol took me 2 hours, 6-7 retry to get the 8mm nut back on, but oh boy i did it.

Tinny hole....

Good job Eric, took me about the same because somehow I had it upside down or inside out. I used a medical locking forecep instrument so I would not drop that pin/ key inside. what a diff after wards though.

At least I'm not the only one with medical forceps in my toolkit

(Some of mine have a really useful "long reach" too.)

I'd hate to think where they've been.

I bought about 6 pairs some years back at a second hand shop that used to be situated not far from the hospital here. (Probably pawned by a hospital orderly who was short of money at the time?)

Did it all with my fingers! i mean get the diaphragm back there and screwed the nut! I did cheat a bit by greasing up my fingers ;-) so the small lock washer and nut would stick.

Yes, the truck was running 1000 rpm instead of the usuall 700, and it did fix the problem. At first i couldn't find a hole in the old diaphragm, but after stretching it, i did find the one you see in the first post.

i'm thinking of replacing the diaphragm on a 3b i'm going to swap in on the weeknd as a bit of preventative maintenance while the engine is out and easily eccessible.. reckon its worth while or wait until it goes?

yeah when i tried to find the hole in my diaphram it disintegrated...

Try putting the diaphram in upside down

then start it up cold and watch your yard immediately get filled entirely with smoke.... its quite amazing actually

For the price of the diaphragm (cheap), gor for it right now while it is out.

the part is on order..

check out the state of the rear of the injector pump.. could that indicate the PO's already beat me to it?

Maybe, or maybe he went in there for a other reason. Open it up while you wait for the new part. But from the picture the whole pump cover is clean not just the diaphragm cover. So that might indicate he went in there for bigger problem.

Been there done that, I'm sure many others have said this but it's about as fun lying in a tub of scissors. I never took the bolt off, just the pin, seemed a little easier that way. She now runs great and gets better MPG

Inflation, eh? I replaced mine in January '07, got it from Nelson Toyota, paid about $25, certainly not $126. Where is the dealer you first went to for this?

that was list price, he would have sold it to me at 100$. I wasn't suprise from the dealer. Maybe you got lucky and your dealer had a crossover part number and could get it else where. But i saw the list price in the dealer system and it is over 100$

I got it for 35$ at a diesel shop.

I'm sure I would have the same bad experience as you if I went to my Toyota dealer here in NZ Eric.

But they are often even worse than that. Just over a week ago I went to them to get a gasket for my alloy valve cover. - Well they didn't even have the part number listed. (They seem to restrict their computer to NZ-stocklistings rather than worldwide stocklistings.)
So as soon as they mentioned they'd have to get it from Japan, I went a few doors down to Repco (a chainstore that is perhaps like "NAPA" in the States) and got one there.

Yep I got a genuine replacement although I think I paid about $40AUD for it.
the aftermarket one I purchase prior was about $35 i think.

A fender is really a guard. A windshield is really a windscreen. A zerk is really a nipple. A trunk is really a boot...........
