Oil filter change on HDJ81

Just did about 3,000 km on the truck and I can see the oil getting sooty. Time for a change.
This is my first time doing it on the HDJ81, I went through previous posts but didn't find answer to these questions, help pleeez:
1- The filter is sitting upright, I am assuming once I undo it, it will spill oil all over the place, true? Any tricks to keep the surroundings clean during the process?
2- It is a common practice to prime the new filter with clean oil prior to threading it back on, how can this be done if the filter is upright the way it is?

Talking about filters, any special tricks to change the fuel filter too or just follow the FSM?

Thanks for the help.
A.

1.True.Use a drip tray/container.

2.You can partially prime the new filter. The drainback valve will hold some of the new oil in but you will get spillage when you invert it after completely filling it.

3.Fuel filter....easy-peasy.Just drain some fuel out from the drain tap on the bottom to prevent excessive spillage.

I wrap a rag around the base of the filter to catch the spillage.

I dont think there is any need to prime a filter. The engine already has a thin coat of oil on it and if your pump is ok,it is only a second or two before it starts getting pressure.

Your filter should be OK for more than 3000klm.
There are particles of soot that turn the oil black that are far too small for the filter to pick up.
