HJ61 Alternator HELP !!! BATT,TURBO,DIFF, Trans temp lights go off and on
So I was out with the HJ on some northern trail getting into a sweet fishing lake in northern sask and encountered a deep sandy hill. going down was easy. but on the way back I locked the truck up and gaver and with the fishing boat behind could not make it up ... stalled the truck
then.. my batt light went on, when I pushed the lockers of the lights stayed on along with my tranny temp light. got out chenked everything and oil was good, could hang on to the trans cooler ( big aftermarket one) so I know my trans temp was good. My red turbo light was on as well as the green one . they flashed off and on under different rpm's. as the day went on trying to get back home the lights went on less and less. usually on idle. anyone have anything like this happen. I'm thinking voltage regulator but don't really want to go there as a 24v reg on fender is = to my firstborn. I found out I can upgrade to a in alternator one for around 75 +the 90 for a new brush holder. any help would be great. __________________ 71 Fj40 350 88 hj61 pto lockers. 85 bj60 dakkar lift , ARB bumpers, body off resto. I would replace your brushes first. The Voltage regulators on these trucks are fairly stout, and they can be rebuilt/adj. If you want to test it out you could borrow the one out of my truck.
What is your voltage doing? Typically when the regulator goes you get sky high voltage but I don't think the lights all come on?? __________________ Brad T 88 HJ61 "Marmaduke " 12H-T, A440, extreme valve body, PI, cable lockers, PTO winch, SOA, 2" body lift, FF, ARP studs, Longfields, 5.29s, 38x14.5R16 Toyo MTs... 78 BJ 40/42/60 |

Don't assume anything has to be replaced! First check the obvious. A loose ground strap is a real possibility given that it started when wheeling. Check your fuseble links for a blown fuse. Check the voltage at your battery terminal when it is off and when it is running. If the battery voltage is low with the vehicle off, charge it up overnight with a trickle charger. Check it again and see if it has accepted a charge. Get back to us with the voltage at the posts. Next, if it all of the above is fine, you can take off your alternator and have it bench tested and have your regulator tested. Many places will do this for free.

hey guys thanks for the info. I had already checked the brushes and they are in good shape. the alternator was so hot when this was happening that things smelled burnt and I could boil water that I poured carefully onto the winding housing.
the truck has since stopped doing this. voltage is 25V with all accessorys/lights on. gauge shows on the 3/4 line of the charge after the heater cycle catches up on start. everything seems normal now but I dont want it to die on me up to my next trip up to the chitek area ( The Dude ) try hunters lake good fishing. The gauge was showing under and over charge after the truck stalled but slowly got better. one place told me that the regulator on the fenders were problematic in that they absorbed moisture and fouled up. I do regulatly wash the truck engine compartment to keep it tlc clean. I also have just put 2 new batteries last month. and I know they were charged on the trail this is kinda weird I was wondering if it is like the water in fuel light that goes on when the bj60's are on the charging fritz. also had a rock blow out the back window on the HJ. are the 24v rear defrost different than the 12v. I can't do a resistance test anymore because the window defrost heater lines are all broken. have 2 rear 12v bj60 windows but no HJ rear windows. __________________ 71 Fj40 350 88 hj61 pto lockers. 85 bj60 dakkar lift , ARB bumpers, body off resto. |
