new primer pump, now it wont run?
So I replaced the primer pump on my 2H, because it was all beat up. I thought, no problem, this will be easy, be done in time for dinner. So I screwed the old one out, popped in a new one (it was the Mercedes versions, cause I get blank looks at the parts store if I ask for a Toyota). While I was at it I replaced the fuel filter which has not been done since I owned it.
She started right up, and I drove about a a hundred yards before it died. Now it cranks and cranks and doesn't catch. Acts like it has air in the system, so I bleed it, and it might run weakly for a second, then putts out again. I fooled around with bleeding it for a couple hours and nothing. I tried putting the old pump back in, but then I couldn't prime the system, as I was not too gentle about removing the old one and it no longer pumped. So, thoughts? My guess is the replacement was bad, and was leaking some air in. I have a new one to try this afternoon, and one of the famous Bosch coming in case that doesn't work. I'd appreciate any input though! __________________ 87 FJ 60 with a 2H and Greasecar WVO kit. |

Did the check valve that sits beneath your primer pump get damaged during the changeover perhaps?
If this check valve (or the spring that sits above it) is damaged (or missing), your engine-operated fuel pump won't be able to supply fuel to your injector pump.

So I got another Benz pump, it is all they have at my parts store. I taped the threads with Teflon tape while I was at, figured it can't hurt right? Screwed it in good and tight, pumped some fuel out of the bleeder screws, the second of which I did not know existed till I read the manual, cranked a couple times and....VOILA, she's alive! It took 9 minutes, plus four hours beating myself up over the bad pump on Saturday. Happy endings all around.
