Water pump problem

Does anybody know if the diesel motors, (the 2b specifically), water pumps have a weep hole in the bottom that lets you know when the pump is going bad? I got a leak and it looks like it's coming from the bottom of the pump.

Mine just went a few weeks ago...and it started rattling real bad. It was all over in about 15 min & I had to tow it back to my garage. Time to order one 'cause it coming.

I think my B engine has a weep hole, and if so, your 2B would likely have one too. But I can't remember for sure.

But why does it matter whether you have a "weep hole" or not?

If there is no weep hole, and the seal within the pump fails, the coolant will simply spew out through the waterpump bearing instead of coming out the weep hole. The way I see it ----- Either way - You've still got to renew your water pump.

I presume the precise source of your coolant leak is hidden by your fan pulley at the moment.

Can I suggest you loosen your fan belt (via the alternator-pivot adjustment) and then see if you can wobble the fan pulley. If you can wobble it - This will confirm that your waterpump is "carput".

PS. The seal can still fail without you finding that the waterpump bearings are "shot" - but this isn't very common from my experience.

Thanks for the replies. I just got home from a 200 mile tow. I was up in San Francisco home is in San Luis Obispo. Thanks to an awesome member, water pump is on order. Is there anything I should look at while I have the pump out besides hoses, belts, Etc.. The pump for my 2b is not cheap, anyone ever rebuild a water pump, it would be nice to have a spare on the shelf.

I'd replace the hoses (and hose clips) that connect to the pump while you're at it.

And be very careful of the pump gasket. I damaged one by trying to fit the pump with the gasket attached to it. Better to stick the gasket to the block instead. (I just stuck it there using some copper grease on the non-sealing part of it.) It is a special/expensive gasket from memory.

You'll probably need to swap the "BSPTxhose fitting" from your old puump to your new one. (Hope it is not too badly rusted. If it is you'll need to replace it.)

And looking at my records - I see the pump I fitted to my B engine back in 2000 did indeed have "coolant weep holes". (It actually had two - one top and one bottom.)

I have rebuilt water pumps before but not those from a cruiser. But I kept my original ex-factory pump for this very same purpose though. I think the best procedure would be to remove the old bearing and old seal and them take them to a parts shop for matching replacements. My guess is that they would be generic (common to other pumps in other vehicles) and wouldn't be hard to obtain.

Keep your old hoses if in good condition as spares, because you know they fit. New thermostat, and you might as well flush the cooling system, before you refill it with new antifreeze.
