So is this the venerable 5 cylinder Mercedes Diesel that is nearly legendary? And it looks like it can be mated to the A440F. That would open up the conversion to FJ80 correct? This is a really cool development. I like it!

I think the Mercedes engine would be great in a 40 and max in a 60. An 80 is IMOP to heavy for this engine.
Better to go with a 6 cylinder 4litre sized engine.

I got that email too....trying to remember when I registered ?? I want to see them do a write up on here and make some solid prices. I will buy a kit from them in the future to use my Mercedes engine in a 40 or a Toyota pickup. But I'm thinking I want a diesel 2wd one with a GM 5 sp.

Dang. Got to find a diesel for the eighty thats cheaper than a 1HZ or 1HD-T half cut, not american (or at least gm), and can be fitted without too much trouble to my A440. : ). Not many options.

Just save for the 1hz for the 80. But you still need a transmission. The stock trans isn't going to work with the diesel. In the EPC they are different part numbers. Lots of parts different. And if you can get all the different parts lined up that's needed, you might as well have bought the trans. Plus someone buying your 3fe for the their 40 might want the auto for offroading.

True. I talked to Rodney from Wholesale Auto's in Australia. He said that it wouldn't be too hard to swap the A440 in behind the 1HZ. Different spline counts and stuff, but it would work. And he has a valve body and torque converter for the A440 that would be good behind the 1HZ. All money though. I would rather have the 1HZ.

Didn't Mercedes use the OM617 in the G-Wagen? It has to be about as heavy as the 80. I have heard they are slow but people seem to love the diesel G-Wagens so I wouldn't totally rule it out for the 80, just depends upon what you are looking for.

I'd rather put a 3B in an 80. Do yourself a favor and don't think about it anymore.
That said I wouldn't mind a W123 wagon with that engine

That is true, but alot of them also got the NON turbo variant with its heart stopping 125 lf/ft of torque. I heard they are painfully slow, but do fine offroad.

They also put the 0M616 (240d) 4-cyl NON turbo in the wagens, I can't even fathom that.

I have heard the G-wagens are slow, some won't even hit 70 mph, not real useful in the states.

My dad has a 2001 GD290 turbo diesel. It's a 4 door 2.9 automatic. Not totally sure if it's the OM617, but I'm guessing it is. It's a dog of the line, but will take off once it eventually hits 3,000 RPM. It will cruise effortlessly down the highway at 140KPH (85MPH) at half throttle.
This must be an exception being a newer vehicle. My friends mom has a 79 300TD.
Lighter vehicle, but pedal has to be mashed to the floor to maintain 75 MPH.
