Question: red button near shifter

I'm back on the forum. I've just completed the LHD conversion on my 97 HDJ81. Everything works fine!
Since I have no English manual there are some little things I would like to know about the car.
First one is the little red button near the shift lever: can someone tell me what it does? Picture attached.
Thanks

Greg

It's the shifter lockout release. Allows you to shift without the key turned.

How's things in Haiti BTW?

wow, that was quick! Things are Ok here, thanks for asking.

Got another one: there is an "auto" setting on the light switch. What does that do?

The obvious comment is "NO - Don't press the red button!

Auto in most cars means either:

the lights go out when you pull the key

OR

The lights have a sensor that turns them on and off when it gets dark/sunny out.

Only one way to tell, place on auto and pull the key out. Then drive through a tunnel or into a garage and see if there is a sensor.

Best,

C

I don't think either of my 80's have "auto" on the light switch. Hmmm...I'll have to check now.

Waiting for the sun to go down...

My next question is concerning the adjustable suspension switch: how do I use that? Am I supposed to stop the vehicle first, or not?

Thanks all!

That ones on the fly. Push it anytime you feel like it.

The "auto" button really does turn on the headlights automotimatically as soon as it gets dark. I don't think it's going to be very useful for me, since there's no tunnel or anything like that around here. I could leave it on, but then again at nighttime, once you turn the key, the lights come on before you start the engine, which I've always been told is not a good thing for the battery.

There's lots of BS tales like that in the developing world. In Guatemala some folks actually believe that having the lights on uses much more fuel or will wear out the engine faster (makes for interesting night time driving when all the clearance lights on other vehicles are not working)!!

Wives tail! Lights are fine with a good battery. Now if you have a half-assed battery and the lights are on it might not have enough juice to crank the engine. Otherwise, I hate wives tales like this.Best,T
