Fitting a turbo, a DIY job, or left to experts?

Hey Gang

Just wondering about puttin a turbo on my 3b, have decided on a turboglide as research suggests that overall these are the simplest and the best.

How challenging are these to fit up and get running right? Is it a job that should really be left to the experts?

Being pretty mechanically minded, I'm keen to do the job myself, however have neve done any work on diesels before, so am somewhat reluctant to do without others advice and experiences.

Thanks in anticipation

Snowy

2 banana...
if you can twist a wrench and follow instructions then you are golden...

if you run into a problem then there are a number of experienced (both book and manual) people to draw on here...

To get it tuned, you are better off paying $140 and taking it to a diesel shop and have them adjust the pump while the engine is running on a dyno.
They like the engine to have new injectors and air filter when they tune it
You can also get a HP and torque printout from them

Cheers Rosco, so are you saying get it tuned and dynoed before fitting turbo or after or both?

If its been tuned and dynoed before the instal, you only need to adjust the fuel later and measure the HP increase, thats if your interested in the HP gain.

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend, but thats how I would do it.
I think a good shop would give you a no obligation break down of the likely costs.
Some recommend Fremantle Injection,I think you are down that way, but I have no personal experience with them.

So far I have found diesel injection shops more open and easier to deal with than general mechanics

Some owners adjust the fuel themselves an 1/8th of a turn at a time until they're happy. You use the pyro gauge to monitor the EGTs

fit up is simple.. take it to get tuned particuly since you have not had much experence with the diesel!
thats what i would do in your situtation!

DIY Turbo

AS I have heard on fitting a turbo tha main thing is to monitir those EGT's ,that is the golden rule ,If the go wrong damage to the engine is possible

to be serious, you have to be running extremely high EGTs to do damage to the engine.

just fitting the turbo reduces the EGTs till you crank up the fuel.

once you are playing with the fuel this is where damge can occur but really only when pulling a long hill, towing a trailer or racing down the road under heavy throttle (with tons of black smoke pouring out the back).

Thanks, so get it tuned after fitting? I assume this to be the case so they can adjust fuel amount.

I spose as Rosco suggests, best to do tune and dyno before and then same again after to measure differences.

Turboglide suggest that I'll need to drive down to an exhaust shop after fitting to get the proper size pipe fitted. Said that the turbo will absorb a lotta noise and not to worry for the short trip, kinda makes sense I guess

oh just one more thing, EGT's are what exactly?

Cheers Fellas

Exhaust Gas Temperatures and viewed on a pyrometer. Once the turbo is fitted ,you drive by the pyro gauge.
If it was me ,I would get all the tuning and exhaust work done beforehand, and once the turbo is on ,just turn the fuel up a little and have fun

Good post Snowy. I am gathering my bits and pieces together ready for an install as well. I got a second hand 3B with a Denco kit attached to it, salvaged the parts I wanted and been collecting gauges and hoses etc ready to bolt it up and run. Look forward to hearing of any progress you make.

Cheers

Okay Rosco I get it, but on a another dumb note, how is the fuel turned up? Do we we just wind up the flow rate somehow, play with idle screws?.. I know with carbs its a matter of rejettin at idle, mid-range and top etc

Yah the turbo absorbs lots of noise. Easy to drive with out an exhaust a few miles to the shop. Just make sure there is nothing right next to the outlet. Keep it slow to make it cool. Keep the hood popped on the latched to purge out the smoke as you drive.

Remove the muffler when you're done. It's not needed anymore. It will be quiet enough with out a muffler. The turbo absorbs that much noise.

Yes, there is a screw on the engine, usually tied down with wire. Im not too familiar with 3Bs ,so you will need to someone else to identify it ,or check the manual
