2001 Isuzu NPR Diesel transmission question

Hello-

I came across this site doing a Google search and I hope this is the correct forum and site for someone to help me with my 2001 Isuzu NPR Diesel. I found out today that the tranny is pretty much shot. All started about a week or so ago-when the truck is stopped and in drive (D), it won't take off--but--if I shift it down to the 1 and get going a couple MPH or so, and then put the shifter in drive it works fine (until I stop again). I drove it to my dealer today (about an hour away) and except for the taking off, it worked GREAT! I am told that they think the low end reverser or something another is bad which pretty much means an entire overhaul. and-get this--they wanted like $8,000 in PARTS ALONE!!! Maybe they're trying to sell me a new one or something. I am writing here to see if any of you have any solutions anything. Again, the truck drives (and shifts) fine once you get going. thanks in advance and look forward to hearing from you guys.

www.4btswaps.com has an Isuzu section with some owners of the later model diesels.
Is yours a 4H?

From 1999 to about 2004, the diesel engine is a 4HE1TC and is mated to an AISIN AW450 automatic transmission. Other than low fluid or plugged filter, most malfunctions will require a transmission teardown in which case you might just as well do a complete overhaul. The dealer price is a bit high. I regualarly see remanufactured AW450 transmission go for around $3K. I've seen some as low as $800. Check this out: eBay Motors: 99 ? on OEM Isuzu NPR W Series AISIN Transmission (item 170240643978 end time Jul-23-08 17:50:57 PDT) Tom's seems to have a good reputation.

For whatever it is worth, dropping a tranny on an NPR is quite easy if you have a transmission jack.
