Adding mechanical oil pressure guage to 1HZ

My "poverty pack" 80 has spartan instrumentation, including a dummy indicator light for oil pressure. I'd like to install a mechanical oil pressure guage, and bought an affordable kit from the autoparts store which comes with 1/4 and 1/8" NPT adapters. Could someone please tell me what type of thread is on the stock sender screwed into the block, so that I can get a suitable T adapter to allow both the dummy light and the mechanical guage to function?
Thanks!

its a standard 1/8thnpt 27 or whatever that is. You can buy a brass "T" and use the new one and the old one as well. Thats what I have on mine.

Thanks Louis. Sounds like a simple installation indeed. I certainly would feel more comfortable driving with an indication of the oil pressure! with that and the "tinytach" and the "engine watchdog" temperature sensor, I'll have more dials to look at while driving, anyway! cheers.

If you bought a guage and it has the plastic hose - buy the copper hose instead - and make sure it is tight - ask me why

Yep, can second that advice. The 1HZ in standard trim is quite bullet proof, sometime the simple accessories we add like a plastic oil line can change that. It is why manufacturers moved to electric senders as even copper lines can break if they vibrate too much. Make sure you coil the copper line, better still is an electric sender unit and gauge, IMHO

Hmmm, you guys have a point there. I recall installing a similar pressure guage YEARS ago on a Camaro I used to own. I used the one with the plastic tubing and didnt' have a problem, but I could now envision that line melting/rupturing with ensuing oil leak, possibly inside the cab. I think the advice to go with an electric sender and guage is a good one, so I'll buy one of those and install it! THanks!

I just threaded the copper tube through a rubber windshield washer line.

i do not recommend running a mech feed into the cab period...
but if you do then make sure there is nothing around it the reacts negative to oil being leaked on it...

I thought the point of installing a mech. gauge was the higher level of accuracy. Is there a way to install one but then have the information sent via some sort of electrical sender?(I realize that last sentence doesn't make a ton of sense)

I guess the jist of my question is how do you use a mech gauge without running it into the cab?

Tim

see that is the problem, you want the accuracy of the mech gauge without the possibility of leakage...
Louis is right, the copper line is much better than the plastic and a rubber grommet for where it passes through the firewall. on the Mits J54,J53 they use this method from the factory with lots of metal retainers to keep the copper line from moving at all inside the cab area.
i have found the aftermarket elec gauges to work as good as the mech hence the change to my gauge applications.
