The Prefect Balance.
The last few days my brain has been buzzing with the up coming diesel conversion project of my FJ62. I am taking my time with this conversion and might not even begin the project until next spring or summer allowing me to collect the correct parts.
For this conversion the perfect balance is to compliment the Land Cruiser station wagon into a daily driven, weekend warrior sporting the best fuel economy. What engine to use and the transmission and other drive train components used. 1st - Highest fuel economy 2nd - Daily Driver 3rd - Family wagon 4rth - Able to carry its own offroad. Rock crawling need not apply. Moderate lift and tire size to compliment the drivetrain. Gearing, arb or e-lockers, etc.. With all this in mind and things I have forgotten to add into the recipe I am seeking the best diesel engine that would allow the best fuel economy and still be able to get my FJ62 around better then the current 3FE, or in my case a 2FE. Family wagon is the main function of this wagon but as with all my family wagons it will be used off road. It can hold its own but isnt meant to be a rock crawlin beast. I can or other people interested can build another cruiser for heavy duty off road. With fuel economy on the table for long trips with the family, any towing would be secondary and of less concern. I do not own a boat (yet) nor do I own a trailer. Someday maybe but for now its just a family wagon. Tire size should stay at the most 33 inches. And the lift should be only needed to support the type of engine and drive train being used. The ability to hold its own during daily driving in town and on the highway. Merging onto highways is not of much importance but it should be able to do so without thinking you are going to get hit by other vehicle. |

1HZ, H55F, 4.11 gears.
SUPER easy swap, best fuel economy of all the Toyota diesels, tons of torque for off road, parts availablility for the next 20 years (no use using an engine that you can not get parts for in 5 years, is there?)... turbo it and that engine REALLY comes alive. no lift needed for 33s skinny, the 1HZ weighs very close to the same as the 3FE. same length same width... seriously, this is one sweet setup in a 6* series. but then read my sig line __________________ pulling this info out of my ass so take it with a pound of salt "People are poor because they don't spend money wisely, tough sh!t !!! What about other diesel engines ? Like the Cummins, ford, GM, Isuzu, etc?
I know there is an adapter to mate the 6.5TD to the A440. |

ford 73. too heavy and large
cummins...well, do a search LOTS of info here GM, once again do a search lots of swaps done Isuzu...ask Dougal, he is the god of that engine too many choices all with good and bad to them. what it will come down to is what you FEEL is the right engine and your wallet. what you will end up with is lots of opinion and opinions are like sphincters, everyone has one... __________________ pulling this info out of my ass so take it with a pound of salt "People are poor because they don't spend money wisely, tough sh!t !!! I agree with Wayne- that rig is on my wish list. A 1HD-T/h55 would be an amazing re-power as well.

I'm behind crushers on his recommendations also.
And I re-emphasize the turbo addition for power and economy. If you had put a budget limit into your project goals and priorities I would probably make a different recommendation. Rick |

I will add to more options to the list .. not saying that the 1HZ it's not the right option .. never ! it's a good if not perfect, just I love the 12H-T engine and the 1HD-T that are of the more powerfull in the Toyota History ..
But down to the 12H-T the fact that it's a old engine with no really much spares due to the short production. |
