1HD-t noise

Well I tried updating the old thread but couldn't pull it up- so here's an update.

Last year I posted up with a strange, metallic noise coming from my new 1HD-t (new short block, all other components came from the old engine). I tried many things to eliminate the noise. I started with the harmonic balancer because when I removed it the sound seemed to disappear. I had Rosco ship me one from AUS (thanks Rosco!) but the new one made no difference. Apparently the balancer was acting as an amplifier. This led me to believe that the noise was related to the timing gears as they are obviously in contact with the crank. I pulled the cover and found some play in the pump idler gear. I took it out and had a machine shop press in a new center, machining it to factory spec. Put it back in, got my hopes up (again) but the noise was still there. What was left? The oil pump. I pulled the whole timing case and when I looked very closely I discovered the issue. The oil pump drive gear had enough end to end play that it was just hitting the case. Interestingly, the FSM, while specifying axial play and gear lash gives no measurement for the end play. Even though I had only run it 1000K or so I was worried about the scrapings running through my engine and so I pulled the pan and checked the bearings- perfect. The filter did it's job. I picked up a case from Mike McT, reassembled and have been noise free ever since.

I thought I'd post this up (almost a year later) just in case someone else should be trying to slueth out a strange noise. I have a feeling though that this is probably a rare occurance with these engines and may have something to do with catastrophic failure of the original engine.
