Is it possible to use a 12 volt alternator on a 24 volt system?

If you install it as an auxiliary/second alternator for a separate 12v system to run all your 12v accessories then yes.

X2 plus the 12v alternator will not have sufficient capacity to charge a 24v battery bank.

Will it burn out the 12 volt alternator if I connect it to a 24 volt system?
There are a couple of wiring issues with this vehicle which may have been converted from 12 volt to 24 volt in the past. My alternator has burned out and when I took it in for repairs two shops have told me that it is a 12 volt alternator as they can check from the windings. They said this even though the brush holder says 24 volt. I put a 12 volt alternator and it isn't working, hence the qusetions. |

Your Battery will charge the amount a volts your alternator will try. If you have 2 batterie for a 12v alternator. Your batterie will run at 6 volts each if no modification is done to you system. You can plug a 12 volt alternator.. but you will buy two new batterie in no long and you cannot start a 24volt starter with that. If you have only one batterie in your truck then you have a 12 volts system then no problème with a 12volts alternator. But if you run with the alternator that burn and you have 2 batteries... you have certainly a 24 volts alternator. Make it rebuild for 24 volts. Change the bearring and diode in the same tame... a little bit more but no probleme for 20 years after that.
