Need a bit of help with my turbo
I just built up my turbo using a crazy hombrew D50 setup and it has an internal wastegate. I have already blown off one of the vacuum hoses which goes down to my injection pump a few times, and it happened again last night. I turned the truck off like I always did, and then reattatched the line but then as I continued home, the wastegate seemed to open up alot earlier, as it seemed like I had no power with higher rpms and a big wistleing sound. Checked things out and everything seemed normal. Could I have blown my turbo? it seems to work at the lower rpm though. There is a big exhaust leak right after the turbo which I have plans for fixing, could that be a problem?
Also I haven't got a pyro or boost gauge (onn order) so I haven't cranked the fuel yet. Any suggestions greatly appreciated, since I don't know much about turbos, only had one for a few weeks and only really know anything from the stuff I read here on mud. A big rush or air usually means that your turbo is working great - but there is an air leak from the turbo to the intake manifold.
Check your connections and pipes - or like what happened to another BJ42 that was out with us last week - his air intake flex hose that is attached from the airbox to that little plastic duct uder the hood collapsed while under load - you can't see it until you throttle it. Take it offf and throw it away if you haven't already. When I first put my intercooler on I had a huge rucking air cound - it was a bunch of loose clamps and pipes that weren't sealed well. Thanks Louis,
I thought it might be the stock hose I used that enters into the intake manifold, but it seemed ok when I was checking it last night. will recheck everything tonight. And as soon as I get my star (sent the MO awhile ago) I will post up pics of the system I jim shimed together. The exhaust leak is from the clowns that built my exhaust. It leaks just after the turbo, because I built it to accept 2.5 pipe, but they started with the part that lets the pipe rattle without ripping mounts off and that is ment to slide onto 2.5 pipe, so it is bigger, and instead of welding a little adapter (which I will have to do so it fits snug) they just tightened it up, crushed it, making a big gap where the exhaust leaks.
I did check the hose today after work, and looks like one of the clamps turbo to intake is a little loose, so hopefully if I tighten that up (which might have been even looser when the engine was hot) it will fix the problem. Ok, I found the problem. Before I drove it, I tightened the clamp and took a closer look at the stock rubber 90 at the intake. Looks like the elbo had split ever so slightly along the inside mold line and probably leting out a lot of the boost when it started getting pretty high due to the higher revs. Anyway I used a lot of electrical tape around the elbow and then two zap straps, which did ok for the test drive. Will have to order up a silicone pipe custom elbow, anyone know where to get one?

I got to replace mine in Swift Current on route to Calgary. 13 psi is where everything pops open. IP air lines etc. 10 psi I had no issues. __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |

Finally got a coolant hose to replace my bandaided stock elbow, and works good now. My question is to all those turbo people: is it common for that top hose on the intake (top clear line in the first photo) to blow off once the engine gets warm and the boost climbes high ?(still waiting on gauge, so don't know exactly the boost I am getting) If it has happened to people, is a simple fix just to put a hose clamp on it?
Thanks, Deny PS you can see my turbo set up on my BJ42 fix up thread, still haven't finished loading all my pictures since I got my star, but I need to stop wasting time here on mud and get back to work. (all turbo pics so far on page 3) __________________ Diesels Rule 81 BJ42 Check out my endless fix up progress at http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=152995 |

Mine lasted like a day, the little clear hose that is. I used real hose clamps then it just blew a hole in the line. I replaced it with some hardend rubber. for my elbow and the rest of my piping I used Silicone Hose - TREADSTONE PERFORMANCE
best $ I could find on 90* elbows, tranistions, humps, clamps, etc. __________________ 1964 FJ40 | 1966 M416 | 1976 FJ40 | 1985 BJ70 Volvo Power| 1997 FZJ80 | TDI commuter car You should be able to delete your own thread. Communists abound
