3B Rebuild

So this summer is my BJ42 restoration summer. I'm pretty excited to get started but I have some primary concerns. My plan is to rebuild my 3B and put a home-brew turbo on it. I'm wondering what the rebuilding process is like for a 3B and how difficult it is. Also, what am I going to be looking at in terms of cost for parts? Where do you guys get your parts for the 3B's? I live in Canada.... I used the search engine but couldn't find an existing thread on rebuilding the 3B. Thanks Mike

"Engine Australia" is good for parts in this part of the world. (And they give you instructions with their kits to guide you through the process.)

I've just bought a full overhaul kit from them for my B engine but I have no immediate plans for fitting it.

I suggest you have a nosey at their website and see what they can provide.

Here's the link:

Dude , just copy and paste "engine Australia" in your browser , or just type engine australia into your browser and hit search and you will see it.

hi mike,
i used this guy to source my parts for the rebuild of a 2h and a 3b. Very reliable, professional and knowledgeable (sp). I would highly recommend him. The parts weren't that bad to ship, from australia.
Darren Cain <darren@uome.com.au>".

I havenot used the guys in edmonton, 4wheelauto.com, however i do hear good things about the service and knbowledge.
hope this helps.

I would source rebuild parts from a few places... I'm not too sure how much of a difference there is in quality for the different kits, or if they are all the same or similiar but that would be my primary concern.... cost vs quality...

I've rebuilt a ton of snowmobile engines and it seems some pistons you get are cast junk with tons of prosity and heat spots, while others are good forged pistons that you can just tell by looking at them, they are way better.... Those of course are for a small 2 stroke engine...

4 wheel auto is one of the first places i'd check, but shop around...

Geoff Walsh Engine Parts in AUS, as well as Roodogs in AUS. I've purchased from Roodogs for my 1HDT and was happy.

As for parts and machining- Kits are around the $1000-$1500 and machining will be around the same. Cruiserguy on this board comes to mind as one who could give you more specific #'s.

I just bought the 3B rebuild kit from 4 wheel auto around $1500, SOR does not have them at the moment and they do not know when they are getting more. 4 Wheel auto says these are excellent kits and have sold many of them and that the parts are made in Japan?

Thanks for the replies guys. What kind of machining am I going to be lookin at? Don't the kits come with new selves for the block? I was thinkin maybe a valve job... $1500 worth of machining sounds like a lot....

What about cylinder heads? Any of you guys replace your heads? I guess I'm wondering mostly because I want to add a turbo.

My head was cracked so yep on the new head and precups. The sleeves were part of the kit.

I can't recall machining costs. The $1500 does not sound too far off though and it has been 2 years and we know where the US dollar has been going....

Good Luck.
Jeff

I order a 3B rebuilt kit and precup from Geoff Walsh Engine Parts last december. I paid aroud 1040$ (can $) for the kit and the shipping.

Then, that was about 600$ for the rebuilt shop only for the block since they can help for the head. I paid another 600$ for the head job in another place ("fusion" shop).

Around here, machining is around 900$ to 1500$.

I know, and that was with me doing virtually all the work except for the machine shop.

For the cost of someone like ColdTaco's 13B-T with a 5 speed you would be much farther ahead.

Unfortunately the 13B-T's weren't really around when I was doing my rebuild.

Craig.

It's still sitting in the crate in my garage too. Someday I'll put it to use.
