injection pump timing

I own a PZJ70 and have just had it's injection pump rebuilt and the injectors replaced.

After the rebuild, there was only a mild improvement in power. In the mornings, when the engine was started up cold and idling,it missed for approxiamtely 10 secs before the "missing" problem disappeared.

I was told by the mechanic that even though the injection pump timing was set at 0 degrees, with the help of a dial gauge, the timing was probably retarded. He further explained, that it is not possible to set the injection timing precisely in an old vehicle (156,00kms) as the cogs are worn out.

Subsequently he set the timing at 5 degrees to compensate. Now, there is significant increase in engine power. However, the engine has become louder and there's an irritating diesel clatter in the background especially at low rpm. Furthermore, there is black smoke from the exhaust with hard acceleration.

How do I keep the power but lose the diesel clatter?

Ok, first I have to say IT IS A DIESEL so you should get used to the chatter. If you have black smoke then I would tell you to retard the timing.

I am not sure the timing was the cause for the miss in the engine when first started, I would think that was caused by a bad or dirty fuel injector.

Sure you are getting more power, but you are also burning and wasting more fuel, you have to decide if you want the power or would rather have fuel economy.

Rule of thumb if you have black smoke it is too far advanced if you have white smoke it is too far retarded.

Cheers,

Michael

Thanks!

With the pump timing being advanced and the engine making a racket, could I damage it?

I don't think so, you can only get so much advance from the pump (ment to be minor adjustment).

If the rattle was there before it could be glow plugs.Try using the glow plugs twicr then start and see if it starts without the "rattle"
