Hello board, new owner/member! :)

Well it looks as though a 82 BJ42 is hopefully on its journey to the US, NYC in particular. My very first Land Cruiser ever!
I'm going to be asking more experienced members for some advice and help on this journey, and I'll try not to ask dumb questions.
Wow, I'm so psyched!

Here's a link incase anyone wants a look.

82 Toyota Landcruiser BJ42, 5speed turbo powersteering - eBay (item 190226510946 end time Jun-03-08 23:06:42 PDT)

I'm sorting out the details now with the seller, and he will hold it for me until
I can arrange a shipper out of Sydney, to a port city here in the US

I'd love to hear from members: good and bad stories on shipping, procedures, etc
I've done lots and lots of reading... but I'm sure there's still more info out there..

I wouldn't have pulled the trigger if it wasn't for this board.
Thanks
Andre

Thanks JohnnyC
Funny I spoke 'stainless 40/45' last week, I was thinking of going out to see his Land Cruiser that's for sale. This one that I just got had the right color, right look, right setup. The right hand drive is the only part I struggled with!
Stainless 40/45 has a nice RHD white rig for sale, he mentioned if no one grabs it, it may go off to Vintage OffRoad.
I'll talk with soon, maybe he'll have some advice for me
I'm a NY in NYC

Gotta find the best/right port for it to come into...

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

RHD and Ports

My seller in NZ paid freight to Balto,so it had to be lowest pricing??You will get used to RHD in a day and love it ,it's no biggie at all, although you will go to the wrong side more than once and be asked if you work for the post office a few times. I can get you the shipping company name etc if you need it?? Joehegolf@yahoo.com

JohnnyC, I appreciate the help. I'll want to make sure I make no mistakes and do things correctly.

Joe Egolf, Thanks, it does look really nice, I lost the auction to someone in Houston. Apparently
the buyer needed to wait a month before making a payment, so again up for sale it went. I got lucky and jumped on it!
As for $, GOOD QUESTION
I'm just starting this process. I will have to find a good customs house broker. I'll also have to decide on who ships this and how and where.

Can you tell me how things went for you from Baltimore?
Did things go smoothly?

rchalmers3: I hope to have it here in September. Come check it out when you hit NYC. We'll swap Costa Rica stories. I've had 3 surf trips down there and love it!

Joe Egolf: Good to know about the RHD. I've only done this on Barbados, it was different! I'll send you an email, I appreciate the shipping company info

I'll try to describe how everything happens in this thread (mods: unless you need it somewhere else)
Perhaps there could be some new FAQ info here

Thanks

Dreko,

There's a well known company in Wilmington Delaware that ships cars in containers to Costa Rica for great prices: Port to Port International Corp: a leading freight forwarder and non-vessel operating common carrier that has helped companies throughout Central America and South America increase their trade volumes.

Don't know if it will help, but it's worth a call to see if they have a deal for you.

Best wishes,
Rick

Nice rig. I think that it is a 83 model, as it has the correct 83/84 dash and a 5-speed(w/ the 83 model shifter). Hope it's journey goes well. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks everyone for the support and help!

roscoFJ73: Didn't know that, I guess I'll have to look closer at the pics he's been sending me

Diesel42: Hmmm, I"m pretty sure it's a 82. Do you think they did an upgrade? I"m getting the build/manufacture date off the metal door tag. I want to see the actual date. Pic is coming

stainless 40/45: Thanks for the hook up! I'll call tomorrow. I may still stop by to see you at some point soon. Just to see you rig. I'll call first, hopefully on a weekend when you aren't at the beach house

rchalmers3: Rick, ok good to know. They could be a backup option

I'm thinking of doing a Roll on/Roll off transport. I'm going to see if NJ ports are an option. Otherwise, Baltimore it is...

Thanks again everyone. Keep the much appreciated support/info coming!

Very nice find ! I recently went through the same and at the end the long wait made it even better although it didn't feel like it at the time

Its a small world for sure- I was watching that one on ebay to see how much it went for.
Did you make an offer after the bidding ended or something? Looks like a great truck- congratulations! (on stealing yet another one of our few remaining 40 diesels)

Beejay42: It is a small world. Funny thing about that ebay auction, I didn't win the first time, nor the second time. Both winners apparently didn't have the $ or seriousness to pulll the trigger. I just sent an email afterwards saying if people bailed on him, I was interested... sure enough, I got bumped next in line...

Hopefully all the shipping details will be finished by the end of next week. I hope it doesn't take too long to get over here!

I'll post who I use, and how it plays out.. in case others find themselves in a similar situation

Ok so I'm waiting on quotes from Blue Freight, and IAN international. I'll see how they compare with today's high oil prices. I've been told, late 2007, it was around 2k for RO/RO shipping. I'm guessing 2.5k for shipping these days...

Shipping time: Not confirmed, but from 3-4 weeks by one shipper, 7-8 weeks by a member. The number of ships bringing in imports is lower than the ships exporting. I think it's usually the exact opposite, 3 to 1 or so.. but the weak dollars has apparently flipped things around... (according to the importer)

I'm going to have the seller steam clean/power wash the BJ42. If there is any dirt on the rig, it can be re-exported or the port may have to clean it for a fee.

I'm curious, is the BJ42 considered a CAR or TRUCK?
Autos. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.5%
Trucks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 25%
The above are duty rates at the port of entry. I seem to remember from the FAQ, there's only a 2.5% duty...

"vehicles that were originally manufactured to meet U.S. emission requirements may be required to have their oxygen sensor and/or catalytic converter replaced."
Does the above apply to the 82 BJ42? I don't think so...

Thoughts?
A

No emissions required, per U.S.EPA. See U.S.EPA form 3520-1

Ah ok good to know on the duty tax. Only 2.5% perfect. My Bill of Sale will be made appropriately

So at the moment, Blue Freight is telling me 2.5K for the shipping. Waiting on the ship dates...
IAN international should have a estimate tomorrow... They are having problems finding a new auto transporter... their old outfit no longer handles autos...
I'll keep you posted with their costs

As for brokerage fees, I'm waiting on this info... hopefully just a few hundred dollars.

Additional info:
1. So the US Customs is very picky these days (after 9/11) No personal items should be in the car. I've asked the shipper Blue Freight about aftermarket radios, spare tire, roof rack, tire jack, jerry can, etc
As long as the items are secured down and not loose and shifting around, it will be considered part of the car

2. No dirt at all! Interior/ Exterior. If Customs finds some, steam charges at the port will be added. If too much is found, it may be sent back to original shipping port! OUCH

3. No fuel in the tank. (I'm asking the seller to leave a cup or so of diesel in the tank.) If the 3B Diesel engine goes dry/empty, I'll have to use the small primer pump on the side of the fuel pump to pull some diesel in...

So far that's about all I know for prepping. I'll get a list as soon as I book the shipping. The seller has to bring the car to port 5 days before it ships. A 'crane' like device will load the car on and off the transport ship. This is what I'm told, but that sounds odd...

Thats it for now!

So Wallenius Wilhelmsen looks like a great shipping company. Just got a quote today.... pretty affordable....
Slowish travel time
June 25 pickup : Sept 13 delivery
Julyl 15 pickup : Sept 15 delivery

1st option, goes to the far east, then to the US (Baltimore)
2nd option goes right to the US

Port Kembla to Baltimore
See routemap below
http://www.2wglobal.com/www/Images/p...Maps/na-oc.gif

Will use IAN international for the Baltimore dropoff, fees, duty, etc

According to the link, your 'cruiser will be leaving Baltimore!

Good job with the detective work. Importing stuff is always a challenge the first 20 or so times.... You found one of the best shippers in the business, now you need a broker refferal. Got any leads?

update (long post)

Rick,

Yeah that link shows the route back and forth. Good to know Wallenius Wilhelmsen is a great shipper.. so far they seem like a very professional company. As for broker, I spoke with my local WW office, they passed me to the office in Sydney, AUS. We discussed the entire process
I asked if they had a freight forwarder they could recommend. Sure enough they did, an hour later I'm sorting things out with the freight forwarder in Sydney.

Once it's underway, I have a broker in Baltimore (recommended by other members) that will handle the import fees, duty, etc and trucking to NYC. (Ian International) Thanks Joe Egolf

I'm on these boards everyday now, sometimes for hours... reading, learning...

Things to do/things to buy:
1.Pyrometer from Isspro
ISSPRO Gauges from egauges.com

Will have the exhaust manifold drilled and tapped close to engine as possible. I'm thinking this is better than welding a bung. Currently I'm still searching for a local automotive machine shop that knows how to work in cast iron.

2. Bolt Kit from cool cruisers
Bolt Kits

I like the clean look

3. harbor freight's compression tester
Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

It looks like I have 1 low cylinder reading, so I'll run the test, if it's still out of spec.. it looks like I'll have to do a valve adjustment. (I'll try this myself)

After it's here I hope to also do the following
LED bulb upgrade
http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series...-cruisers.html

Bilstein rear shocks if it rides too hard
New Toyota OEM springs
Start using Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 (Formerly Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5w-40)
Valvoline Synth Brake Fluid
Mobil 1 Synth Gear oil
Running BioDiesel (making it eventually) and replacing fuel filters
BRAKES: Don't know how it feels yet, but I like the idea of adjusting the rear drums (for straight hard stops) and upgrading to a dual boost master cylinder (stronger stopping power for front disks)
...
<wishlist continues with the sound of money being sucked out of my wallet>

Oz import

dreko, Any news on your cruiser? How much cheeper was Wallenius Wilhelmsen than Blue Freight? Did you have it shipped Ro/Ro with Wallenius Wilhelmsen or something differant? Who and what does the freight forwarder do in this process? Thanks, any and all info is appreciated.
