I have accesss to a fj60 tachometer. Any way to make this work in my 2B engine?
Thanks! K __________________ 1981 JDM BJ44 RHD - Going under the knife soon! |

i am not positve but i dont think this tack will work unless you have a sensor in you bellhousing that i will plug into. i just put an autometer on my 3b part number 2888. look it up it reads off the alternator.easy install.

Won't work. The FJ tach takes a signal from the distributor or alt or something. The pre 90 Toyota diesels take a signal from a hall effect sensor that reads the teeth on the flywheel.
See if you even have a sensor in the bellhousing... being JDM it just might. If not you will have to drill and tap. The Autometer might be the simplest route as you won't get a 60 tach into your 40 cluster anyway. __________________ 93 1HD-T swapped FZJ80 VW A4 Jetta TDI My other diesel is a Locomotive www.gscruiserparts.com |

This one is available ![]() This is the tach sensor that goes with this housing also available ![]() Shipping will be substancial Best Regards Gord |

Ok,
let's take this one step further. Has anyone ever ADAPTED the hal-effect sensor to another tachometer? I would like to do so because of space limitations on my dashboard... __________________ N6LG - Extra Class Amateur Radio Operator 1982 FJ40 (HJ41), 12HT turbo diesel, H55, ARB locker, e-locker, Marks Gears, APRS 1997 LX450, 1HT-FT/H151 diesel conversion in process... 1972 FJ40 Fun Beater Rig, Bone Stock! |

Ive seen pics of diesel 45/47 series in AU that have a tach mounted to the right of the main cluster in the dash. Maybe you can find one of those? It would use the hall sensor mentioned. You could also try the tiny tach that others have used. The small led readout would be good for your space limitation and it would be easy to get. |

The problem with the TinyTach is calibration. You still need some sort of reference for true RPM's.
BTW: I thought TinyTach is LCD (ie:not LED). __________________ N6LG - Extra Class Amateur Radio Operator 1982 FJ40 (HJ41), 12HT turbo diesel, H55, ARB locker, e-locker, Marks Gears, APRS 1997 LX450, 1HT-FT/H151 diesel conversion in process... 1972 FJ40 Fun Beater Rig, Bone Stock! |

I dont really follow on your statement re: calibration though. The tach runs off the pulse of the injection pump which happens only every 360 degrees for each cylinder. What needs to be calibrated? |

Ditto on the calibration?? I just installed mine, there's no calibration!
As for the autometer tachs, part number 2888 where are you finding that Greekboy, I have searched there site with no luck and when I've checked with the auto stores they can only find 12 volt models, unless you can find a mechanical tach you will need a 12 volt supply for any of these tachs if they are connected to the alt or to a bellhousing sensor. The only simple and cheap solution for the 24 volt Landcruiser models I can find is the Tinytach. Cheers |

Why would you need to calibrate it? Its sensing fuel flowing through the injector line; that only happens once per two revolutions on every four stroke diesel.

Here's a Autometer from Summit racing Auto Meter
You can pull 12v from your converter to illuminate the light. Works off of the alternater, no calibration. __________________ 1983 BJ42 1978 FJ40-Sold 1975 FJ40-Sold |

The tint tach, again, needs no calibration. __________________ "... the motor car, after woman, is the most fragile and capricious thing on earth." - London Daily Mail 1908 1982 BJ42 "Krull" |

So has anyone here installed the Autometer tach? If so, how did you do the calibration? The instructions suggest using "test equipment found at many stations or dealers"...

If you're brave and work quickly you could use the rev limiter as your rpm reference.
You could also calculate your final drive ratio and calibrate in motion via the speedometer. Or take the rear driveshaft out and use the speedometer as above, but while stationary. More outlandish ideas: Use a laptop with a microphone and spectral analyzer, there should be a good bit of power at 2*engine frequency (rps). __________________ "... the motor car, after woman, is the most fragile and capricious thing on earth." - London Daily Mail 1908 1982 BJ42 "Krull" |
