bj60 highway cruising RPMs
Looking for thoughts on what the ideal cruising RPMs would/should be on a FJ62 w/ a 3B transplant. I came across the prairies the other day and am heading back to Manitoba tomorrow. I kept it around 2200-2300 RPMs which got me to about 100 KPH. I'm wondering if I'd be pushing the engine to hard if I were to bring it up to 2600-2700 RPMs over a sustained period of time (this would get me to about 110 KPH). Thoughts and recommendations greatly appreciated!

your mpg drops substantialy over 100 kmph , remember that your pushing alot of air , the 60 does not have a good drag coeficent , i know a comercial transport study that showed the best mpg's at between 90 and 100 kmh ,from my own personel experience i noticed that i got the best performance at between 1800 and 2000 rpms with my 3b on 33"bfg's

Thanks for the info. Makes sense that the best fuel mileage is between 90-100 KPH. I'm presently running 31X10.50 so my RPMs will be a bit higher at 100 KPH than your 33s. Fuel mileage aside though, is 2600 RPMs pushing the engine to hard over a sustained period of driving?

2600 isn't too much. I've pushed at 3k for awhole day. But I'm turbo'd.
Low rpms are not good either. Too much egt. I find my engine is got some steam at about 2500 in 5th. About 105. 32.7 tires, 5 speed manual, 4.11 gears and 10 pounds boost.. I'm loaded pretty heavy right now though too. Empty feels good at 2200 rpm. Don't lug below 2000 with your foot on the floor. Your head will find out it's too hot on egt. I faced such bad winds 2 days ago on the praires I had to cross at 90 kmh and 2600-2700 rpm to hold speed. That was winnipeg to regina. my steering wheel was cranked almost sideways the whole day.... __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |

I hear ya... I came into Regina from Winnipeg on Thursday and had a stiff wind too... Heading back tomorrow PM. I have virtually no weight (myself and a suitcase) and maybe I'll be blessed with a strong tail wind tomorrow. I'll try it at about 2500-2700 RPMs tomorrow. Thanks for the tips...

I've cruised for a while around 2,900 NA... as long as I was going downhill I didn't feel like I was punishing it, and going uphill I let off a bit. I'm low geared so in 5th 90km/h is about 2200. For fuel mileage I like to keep it around that.
Brownbear: if I'm lugging putting my foot on the floor really doesn't make much difference over pressing down lightly... I can't see much point to putting foot down anyway (especially NA). Am I the only one?? |

I thought I was the only one! There is essentially no difference between 1/4 throttle and WOT if I'm lugging it, I thought something was wrong...

the difference is seen on a pyrometer. Letting off the throttle brings the temps back quite well.
But don't lug it. Downshift. It's better to climb at 3k rpms than it is to sit at 2200 and your foot into it. Let the engine breathe is my theory. __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |

You will burn less fuel at lower rpms. The xtra 400 rpms isnt worth only gaining 10kph. My 3b is real happy under 2400rpm. Fj62s were equipped with 4.11 thirds. Bj60s were equipped with 3.73 thirds. Were the bj thirds swapped into your 62 during the swap? They will give you lower rpms on the hwy. __________________ 82 Fj60 TurkeyWizz THXAL 88 BJ62 Family Truckster http://nfcruiserheads.org/forum/index.php |
